Applied Statistics - Week 8

Monday the 18th - Friday the 22nd of January 2021

The following is a description of what we will go through during this week of the course. The chapter references and computer exercises are considered read, understood, and solved by the beginning of the following class, where I'll shortly go through the exercise solution.

Monday:
Fitting is an art, and the higher level of details wanted, and hence the more parameters involved, the greater of an art it is. Todays exercise is one in advanced fitting, introducing more and more parameters.
Reading:
  • Curve Fitting (Wikipedia)
    Lecture(s):
  • I will talk about statistics in general, and give an introduction to todays exercise.
    Zoom: Link to lecture.
                  Link to exercises.
  • Recording of Lecture video, Lecture audio, and Lecture chat.
    Computer Exercise(s):
  • Advanced fitting exercise: HarmonicOscillatorFit_original.ipynb,
          data_HarmOsc1.txt,
          data_HarmOsc2.txt,
          data_HarmOsc3.txt,

    Tuesday:
    I will go through the curriculum from one end to the other, and answer all the possible questions you may have, both on statistics and regarding the exam.

    Reading:
  • You should at this point have read the whole curriculum and all the exercises.
    Lecture(s):
  • I will shortly go through an Exam Check List.
  • Then I'll give essentially very short versions of the last seven week's curriculum. They will probably (surely?) run for more than one hour.
    Zoom: Link to lecture.
                  Link to exercises.
  • Recording of Lecture video 1, Lecture video 2, Lecture video 3, Lecture chat.
    Computer Exercise(s):
  • Whichever you think are relevant for you! We will answer any questions, and assist with remaining exercises and/or (rehersal) exam questions.

    Thursday:
    Exam will be given at 8:00 at the latest.
    Possible files and scripts will be made available on the course webpage and GitHub at the same time. I will announce it on Absalon.

    Friday:
    Exam has to be handed in by 20:00 SHARP!
  • Exam solutions (in PDF with no code) should be submitted along with the code used to produce them (separately as an appendix - as many files as you like in whatever format!) at eksamen.ku.dk.
  • If you for some reason can not submit your exam solution on eksamen.ku.dk, then you should send your solution (along with separate code) by mail to me (petersen@nbi.dk).
  • If you have any general problems, then you should write or call me asap!
