TRAINING

Nonlinear dynamics is a new field which attracts many young researchers, both Danish and foreign, and there is lively student participation, with relatively large enrollment in chaos courses. An important role is played by the weekly NBI/Nordita group meetings in chaos, quantum chaos and fluid dynamics in which some 10-20 young researchers discuss informally the latest advances in a broad spectrum of nonlinear problems. We believe that training young people in nonlinear science is a good investment, as the tools acquired should equip them to tackle a broad variety of problems. CATS acts as a de facto European center for graduate education, with Ph.D. students supported by and sent to us from Norway, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Brazil and other countries. The first generation of our Ph.D.'s is already professionally active, and the enthusiasm and quality of the students and research fellows that we see entering the field bring promise of a dynamic and vital coming generation.

Indicative of the level of activity and international standing is the number of researchers who have worked with the CATS-groups for more than 2 months during 1994: 12 postdoctoral fellows, 11 Ph.D. students, 31 master degree students, and 8 visiting foreign scientists. Many of the visitors, fellows, and students arrive with their own funding.
