The first period comprises the dissemination of Bohr's theories in the 1920s and early 1930s, Bohr's visit to China in 1937, visits of Chinese physicists to Bohr's institute, and Bohr's becoming acquainted with Chinese philosophy, in particular that of Lao Tse. The second period includes, on the one hand, severe criticism of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics and of Bohr's complementarity argument in the 1950s and 1960s, and, on the other, Bohr's being invited to China by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1957. The third period saw, first, an increased discussion and application of Bohr's correspondence principle, and, second, debate on Bohr's epistemology and its relation to realism as well as the introduction of his idea of an "open world." Special attention will be given to Professor Ge Ge's contribution to the introduction of Niels Bohr and his work in China, beginning in the early 1960s. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2. TAUBER Professor in Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine and Professor in Philosophy, Boston Center for The History and Philosophy of Science holder fire forelaesninger i Danmark i uge 43. --------------------------------------------------------------- Tirsdag den 24. oktober, kl. 15 Videnskabernes Selskab, H.C. Andersens Boulevard 35, Kbh WHAT ARE POST-MODERN EFFECTS IN SCIENCE? --------------------------------------------------------------- Onsdag den 25. oktober, kl.15 Hannoverauditoriet, Panuminstituttet, Blegdamsvej 3, Koebenhavn og Fredag den 27. oktober, kl.15 Studenternes Hus, AArhus Universitet THE IMMUNE SELF: THEORY OR METAPHOR Abstract: Inspired by Alfred North Whiteheads view of the relation between science and philosophy ("If science is not to degenerate into a medley of ad hoc hypotheses, it must become philosophical and must enter upon a thorough criticism of its own foundations"), professor Tauber has developed the first philosophical critique of immunology. In his former book (Metchnikoff and the Origins of Immunology, 1991) he argued that organismal identity is an evolving process of an organism engaged in challenges from both its internal and external environments. In his recent book (The Immune Self: Theory or Metaphor? 1994) he takes this analysis further by tracing the development of self in the history of immunology from its 19th century founders to its recent status. Self as a metaphor has achieved an unassailable status in immunology, not because it is a precise scientific term, but because it resonates with our understanding of core identity. Professor Tauber maintains that there is no such entity as the immune self as a definable scientific construct. Self is used as a convenient mode to allude to identity -- a code for an experimental approach, or perhaps better, an operational construct. Yet, the self metaphor serves to orient the science of immunology and is crucial in erecting its theories. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Torsdag den 26. oktober, kl. 15 Auditorium 3, August Krogh Instituttet, Universitetsparken EMERGENTISM AND REDUCTIONISM IN THE LIFE SCIENCES Reduktionismen har vaeret en fremherksende forskingsstrategi op igennem dette aarhundrede, medens emergentisme tit er blevet opfattet som en blindgyde. Annonce: Cybernetics and Human Knowing is a quarterly international multi- and inter-disciplinary journal on second order cybernetics and cyber-semio-tics. The journal is devoted to the recent understan-dings of self-organizing processes of information in human knowing that have arisen through the cybernetics of cybernetics, or second order cybernetics. Through the concept of self-re-ference it tries to explore: the meaning of cogni-tion and communication; our under-standing of organization and information in human, artificial and natural systems; and our understanding of understanding within the natural and social sci-ences, humanities, information and library scien-ce, and in social practices as education, organi-sation, teaching, therapy, design, art, manage-ment and politics. It bring forth a new integrative and non-reductionistic perspective on the seeming paradoxes of human knowing, and celebrates the self-referential processes that bring such paradoxes about. Scientific endeavour in the post-modern age is becoming increasingly complex and transdis-ciplinary. Researchers and practitioners in the arts and the natural, medical and social sciences realize that the sharing of knowledge is both desirable, necessary and possible. For people working in the IT-sector, second-order cybernetics can be translated to the understanding of a "user". In this, Cybernetics & Human Knowing is a valuable complementary to technologically oriented magazines as we provide a rich epistemological soil for the emergence of future metaphors. Our focus is on the need for change in the basic concepts of ourselves, our cultures, world views, values and views of what "genuine" knowledge is, and on the call for a new exchange between theoreticians and practitioners. A basic feature of this work is the attempt to integrate scientific thinking with ethical and aesthetic perspectives in both theory and practice, in an attempt to bridge what C.P. Snow called "The Two Cultures". The journal as such is an autonomous knowledge and communication system, supported and affiliated with the American Society for Cybernetics. Because of the interdisciplinary character, articles are generally written in such a way that readers from other domains can understand them. Authors from a wide range of disciplines, whose common ground is a passion for interdisciplinary, cybernetic, and semiotic description and explanation, will write with a sensitivity for language that will make their ideas clear and their subject fascinating. Scientific papers are of course peer reviewed. Now and then, space will be given to more technical papers, and a paper from a practitioner. The journal is thus a meeting place for those developing cybernetic and semiotics with those doing cybernetics and systemic work. The lay-out and illustrations of every issue s done by an artist, whose contributions are an integral part of the journal. Within this frame, embodying the creative with the (multi)disciplinary, the journal has a high scientific standard and integrity - following Gregory Bateson's model of rigor AND imagination. This strategy makes the journal interesting and readable for those interested in cybernetic and semiotic practice in government, industry, education, therapeutic fields and the various fields of information and communication science. Announcements of conferences, publications, jobs, issues in the relevant fields are also welcome. Science as Culture is affiiliated with the hard copy journal of the same name published by Process Press Ltd. (http://www.shef.ac.uk/uni/projects/gpp/process.html) and (US & Canada) Guilford Publications Inc. (info[at]guilford.com). A list of back issues is at: http://rdz.stjohns.edu/gp/process.html A web site associated with the forum will hold articles from back issues, as well as submissions under consideration (not obligatory), whose authors may benefit from constructive comments for purposes of revisions before the hard copy is printed, as well as longer piece not suitable for the email format which forum members may wish to discuss. The core constituency may be people concerned with cultural, social, hoistorical and philosophical studies of science, technology and medicine, but all are welcome. Accessibility of expertise to critical scrutiny is a large part of the point. Discussion on this list is intended to reflect Sir Karl R. Popper's main concerns: his attachment to Critical Rationalism, and his commitment to Democratic Humanitarianism, both inextricably imbricated to the extent that the feeling of Reason above individualism implies the ethical decision to believe in the Unity of Mankind and the radical rejection of any kind of authoritarianism. The Popper mailing list for discussions of Popper's multiplex views on Epistemology, the Scientific Method, Social and Political Issues, his involvent in the Philosophy of Mind, his controversial revisions of the Pre-Socratic philosophers, Plato, Hegel and Marx, and so on, welcomes contributions from professionals and academics currently engaged in any kind of scholarly endeavour linked with the humanities, either from a purely theoretical viewpoint or as means to buttress scientific pursuits - e.g., research projects- within a reliable epistemological framework. Henrik Zinkernagel. --- Do you believe that in some historical periods some scientific communities have improved the "competence of reference" or "validity" of some of those beliefs on which they have achieved a new consensus? IF SO, THIS WAS A SOCIAL SYSTEM PRODUCT, DUE TO PERSUASION AND DISCRETIONARY JUDGEMENTS, I.E. WITHOUT ENTAILING PROOF. Do you believe that the achievement of new consensual beliefs of improved validity happens more frequently in science than in other belief-sharing and belief-transmitting social systems? IF SO, THIS MAY WELL BE DUE TO DISTINCTIVE ASPECTS OF THE SOCIAL SYSTEM OF SCIENCE, EVEN THOUGH NOT EPISTEMOLOGICALLY PRIVILEGED. As a field, "The Sociology of Scientific Validity" would attempt to delineate those social system features which may help optimize the production of new consensuses of improved competence. It might be envisaged as a second phase of the social-contructivist, relativist, interest-oriented, symmetrical sociology of scientific knowledge. It could be in part a comparative sociology, com pairing for example the social system of astrology at various historical periods with that of astronomy. It could study differences in the valid productivity of different laboratories and national styles. There would be externalist principles: What kind of socio-political structures optimize validity-seeking science. There would be internalist principles: patterns of communication, rules of persuasion, norms, the degree to which norms are lived up to, and the sanctions imposed when violated. Also relevant are sociological speculations as to the effect of current features of scientific institutions on the selection of beliefs for competence of reference: e.g. requirements for the achievement of tenure, the effects of tenure once awarded, editorial review processes, research funding, etc. Some of these may have negative effects. BUCHWALD The Dibner Institute for History of Science, MIT, Cambridge, Mass. HOW THE MICROWORLD BECAME REAL?: THE 19TH CENTURY ORIGINS OF PRACTICAL MICROPHYSICS Mandag den 12. februar, kl. 13.30 (praecis) IMFUFA, bygning 02, Roskilde Universitetscenter Buchwald's autoreferat: "Since the 1930's, and more especially since the end of World War II, high energy physicists have dominated the discipline intellectually, socially, and institutionally. Although it now seems that this dominance is coming to an end, nevertheless the persistent belief that the true and proper aim of fundamental physical research has, since at least the 17th century, been the elucidation of the micro- world, remains common. In this talk I will instead argue, first, that the microworld was at best a peripheral concern throughout most of the 19th century; second, that characteristic micro-concepts and methods were utterly uncommon until well into the 1890's; and third (and in consequence), that the microworld came to practical life pre- eminently in The Netherlands and Germany precisely during that decade. I will also contend that the early life of the micro-world emerged directly out of tools, techniques, and concepts provided by what, in retrospect, the micro- worled displaced, namely the ether." A few artworks, rare books, artifacts, and postage stamps are now available on World Wide Web. The images appear as part of the Virtual Tour of Galveston, which is in turn a part of the Home Page of The University of Texas Medical Branch. The URL for the Virtual Tour: http://www.utmb.edu/galveston/ Or, the full URL for the Blocker images: http://www.utmb.edu/galveston/universities/utmb/mml/blocker.html Let me also add that these are images with high resolution. With appropriate software and a good monitor, one should be able to read the titles stamped in gold on the spines of rare books, or read the name of the drug, "Pink Pills for Pale People." I have looked at these digital images from different monitors and was amazed how the quality varied from one set up to another. So, this could be a test for your monitor! Enjoy! Forelaesningerne holdes paa Roskilde Universitetscenter TIRSDAG DEN 23. APRIL, 12.30- 15.30 i teorirummet, P8 Dick Kasperowski og Jan Nolin (Inst.f.Vetenskapsteori, Goeteborgs Univ.): FORSKNING OM FORMIDLING AF VIDENSKAB: ET NYT FORSKNINGSFELT TIRSDAG DEN 23. Forslag til forberedelsesmateriale: Bruce Lewenstein, "Science and the media" og Brian Wynne, "Public understanding of science", begge i S. Jasanoff, m.fl. (eds.), Handbook of Science and Technology Studies (SAGE, 1995) Jan Nolin (Institutionen f. Vetenskapsteori, Goeteborgs Universitet): DAGSPRESSENS FORMIDLING AF TRUSLEN MOD OZONLAGET TIRSDAG DEN 23. Som forberedelse kan man laese: Allan Mazur og Jinling Lee, "Sounding the global larm: environmental issues in the US National News", Social Studies of Science, vol.23 (1993), 681-720, og Allan Bell, "Media (mis)communication of the science of climate change", Public Understanding of Science, vol.3 (1994), 259-275. Men fysikerne bruger flere modeller i kortere tid ad gangen.
