I Newtons version lyder navnet fluxionsregningen. I then will analyse the specific arrangements/ configurations between scientific, technological, environmental and business elements present in these three sub-sectors of the chemical industry, and illustrate their mutual interaction during the 20th century, using examples from the Dutch chemical industry (Shell; DSM; and fertilizer and dyestuffs companies). Special attention will be paid to the role of science. Torsdag d. 19. marts stud. scient. Jonas Cilieborg : Relativitetsteoriernes modtagelse i Danmark Abstract: Jeg vil i mit kollokvium indledningsvis soege at give en kort oversigt over fysikersamfundet i Danmark omkring aarhundredeskiftet. The University and the City". From: Jerry LR Chandler (by way of hoffmeyer[at]mermaid.molbio.ku.dk (Jesper Hoffmeyer)) Subject: WESSconf. 6 Abstracts, Feb. 15, 1998 Call for Abstracts: 6 th Interdisciplinary Conference on General Evolutionary Systems: Evolution and Semiotics Abstracts for 6 th Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on General Evolutionary Systems of the Washington Evolutionary Systems Society (WESS) are sought. The conference will be on on the weekend of May 8, 9 and 10, 1998 at the Reiss Science Building on the campus of Georgetown University, 37 th and ãOä Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20021. Abstracts are due February 15, 1998. Semiotics is postulated to be a critical feature of evolution. Signs and signals, not only within human language, but also in the arts, sciences, medicine and mathematics, play a substantial role in human culture. Other biological organisms also deploy characteristic signs and signals, for a wide range of communicative and social purposes. At present, the role of semiotics can be viewed as controversial. Differing views of the basic phenomenon are common. For example, von Neuman (The Theory of Self Reproducing Automata, 1966) pointed out that logical necessity of matter-symbol complementation. He noted that matter and symbol are categorically distinct, for example, neurons generate pulses but the pulses are not in the same category as neurons; computers generate bits but bits are not in the same category as computers. Karl Pribram (1972, and later) described linkages between neurological structures and codes, images, and symbols and hence psychological functioning. Hoffmeyer, (Signs of Meaning in the Universe, 1996) proposes a central role for semiotics in biology and evolution. C. S. Pierceâs writings on Semiotics are a primary root of the American school of pragmatic philosophy. The notations of mathematics and the sciences are composed from symbols - such notations are critical to our views of natural systems and our capacity to translate from one discipline to another. For example, Michele Malatesta (The Primary Logic, 1997) proposes a decision tree for classifying artificial and natural signs. Thus, in WESSconference VI, we seek to explore the evolutionary relationships between semiotics and complex systems -- from the qualitative and subjective as well as from the quantitative and objective perspectives -- in order to construct a better understanding of general evolutionary systems. Three symposium are being organized for the sixth annual WESS conference: * Semiotics and the Emergence of Mind. * Evolutionary Philosophy: Information and Semiotics. * Semiotics and the Modeling of Complex Systems. Abstracts are also sought in other areas of evolutionary systems. Abstracts should not exceed two pages. Abstracts should be written to communicate with individuals of widely varying backgrounds in order to facilitate transdisciplinary communication. Abstracts may be edited prior to publication. Authors of abstracts accepted for presentation will be notified. Abstracts should be submitted in electronic format. The preferred submission is via email (JLRChand [at] Erols.com ); floppy disk (31/2 inch) submissions (either Mac or DOS formats) are also acceptable. For clarifications, call 703 - 790 - 1651. Abstracts may be posted on the web, www.wess.org, after the WESS site returns to operation in early February. WESS is a transdisciplinary society which promotes the study of evolutionary systems of all types. Members of WESS work in more than 100 different scientific and academic disciplines. We seek to inform each other of emerging concepts in our individual disciplines and to facilitate communications among the various disciplines. A little bit of background information: The Philosophers' Web Magazine is an on-line philosophy resource, featuring philosophy news, reveiws, features, interviews and articles. We have recently published or are about to publish contributions by: G. A. Cohen (Oxford University); T.L.S. Sprigge (Edinburgh University); Ned Block (NYU); Ted Honderich (London); Anthony Gottlieb (Birkbeck); and many others. We also exist as a hard-copy quarterly magazine - The Philosophers' Magazine - which has an international distribution. The URL for The Philosophers' Web Magazine is: http://www.philosopher.demon.co.uk/ [or http://www.cix.co.uk/tpm.htm ]. Anyway, we are in the process of setting up what we hope will be a definitive World Wide Web Philosophical Events Directory. I'm sure you can imagine the kind of thing - we will be detailing philosophy conferences; lectures; book signings and so on. This service will be absolutely free. To help us with this task, we badly need the help of philosophy related organisations and associations worldwide(hence this email). We will be very grateful if you would be kind enough to forward details of any forthcoming events organised by your organisation/association to the following e-mail address: events[at]jstangroom.cix.co.uk In addition - or alternatively - if you have a postal mailing list, we would like to be included. The address is: The Philosophers' Magazine (Events) 58 Upper Tollington Park London N4 4BX United Kingdom fax: (+44) (0)181 643 1504 I think that we can do a good job publicising philosophical events. We currently attract well over 1000 visitors to our Web Site a week, so there is obviously a chance of some good exposure. One final request: if you check out The Philosophers' Web Magazine and approve, we'd be very grateful if you'd consider adding a link to us on your website. The preferred URL is, as above: http://www.philosopher.demon.co.uk/ Many thanks for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Its membership consists of those interested in a variety of disciplines, including history, public health, demography, anthropology, sociology, social administration and health economics. The Society has an active Programmes Committee which organises at least two conferences per year. It publishes *Social History of Medicine* (Oxford University Press, 1988-) and the SSHM *Gazette*, an accompanying newsletter reporting on conferences and other relevant news. In 1987, following a number of Society-sponsored publications, SSHM also launched a series of edited volumes, currently published by Routledge under the title 'Studies in the Social History of Medicine'. Though primarily based in the United Kingdom, the Society has always had a thriving international membership, and Social History of Medicine has continued to expand its international coverage, reflecting the growing number of subscribers outside the UK. Details of membership and subscriptions, publications, past and forthcoming conferences, Executive Committee membershp and other news can all be found at the Society's website. James T. Cushing University of Notre Dame The scientific realist claims that our successful scientific theories give us a reliable window into the working of the physical universe, at least as far as the major characteristics of that world are concerned. For example, some physical theories are deterministic (e.g., classical mechanics) and others are often seen as inherently probabilistic (e.g., quantum mechanics). At various times in the history of science, the success of such theories has served as a warrant for transferring these general properties from the epistemological domain to the ontological one, so that the world itself was first taken as being deterministic and later as indeterministic. However, even such a fundamentally important feature as determinism versus indeterminism cannot be decided on the basis of logic and of empirical evidence alone. <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<> From: Soren Brier I apologize for possible cross-postings. CALL FOR PAPERS: SYMPOSIUM ON CYBERNETICS AND SEMIOTICS How can they supplement each other in the life-, information- and social sciences? as part of The International Association for Cybernetics conference in Namur 24 to 28 August 1998 Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. S¿ren Brier, Royal School of Librarianship, Aalborg Branch, Langagervej 4, 9220 Aalborg ¯st, Denmark. Tel:+4598157922. Fax:+4598151042. E-mail:sbr[at]db.dk. Homepage: www.db.dk/dbaa/sbr/home_uk.htm. Cybernetics - especially in the form of second order cybernetics and autopoiesis theory - has become more and more important in the understanding of the cognition of living and social systems focusing on the importance of information and communication within and between these systems. The theories of von Foerster, Maturana & Varela and Luhmann has made an important impact here. Recently a socio-cybernetic group has been formed under the International Sociological association organised by Felix Geyer. For some years now the FIS (foundations of information science) group has been active discussing the proper foundation for a transdisciplinary information science. But both within the life sciences and especially within the electronic applications of communication and information sciences in AI and Cognitive Science there has been fundamental problems in dealing with the semantic level when pure scientific approaches are pursued. In semiotics - especially the semiotics based on Peirce's triadic, evolutionary and pragmatic philosophy - signification is a basic concept in the understanding of cognition and communication. The symposium call for papers proposing ways of using the knowledge of self-organisation in systems that cyberne-tics give us with the pragmatic view of meaning in semiotics and language philosophy to come to a better understanding of living and social system's handling of information and communication. Some outcomes could be: Better understanding of the special qualities of the living and its cognitive abilities versus the computer, better understanding of the phenomenon of consciousness, better understanding of the function of signification and communication in social sy-stems and a better understanding of man-machine interactions and therefore better ways to integrate machine capabilities to support human knowledge and action for instance in the field of document retrieval. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Prospective contributors are invited to submit a 1-page (about 2K) abstract (preferably including references), along with the author's name, postal and email address and affiliations. The submission should be sent by email to the symposium chair S¿ren Brier. sbr[at]db.dk. The deadline for receiving submissions is March 10, 1998. The proposals will be refereed by the journal's review board. You will be notified about the acceptance (or rejection) of your proposal as soon as possible, but not later than March 31, 1998. If accepted, the full text of the paper, which must not exceed 6 typed, single-spaced pages, is to be sent by postal mail to the congress secretariat before May 31, 1998. All papers that are personally presented by the author at the congress will be published in the congress Proceedings. The authors of the best papers will be invited to publish an extended version in the journal Cybernetics & Human Knowing: A Journal of Second Order Cybernetics and Cybersemiotics, homepage: http://www.db.dk/dbaa/sbr/cyber.htm If you wish you can submit a maximum of two papers in different symposia of the congress. Submissions for other symposia should be sent directly to the congress secretariat before February 31 (originally January 31), 1998. ABOUT THE CONGRESS The 15th International Congress on Cybernetics will be held from August 24 to 28, 1998, in Namur (Belgium) at the Institute for Computer Sciences of the University of Namur. The International Congresses on Cybernetics are organised triennially (since 1956) by the International Association for Cybernetics (IAC). The interdisciplinary domain of cybernetics, addresses subjects such as information, communication, organisation, intelligence, complex systems, and feedback loops. Namur is a quiet little city on the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, at the foot of a hill supporting impressive medieval fortifications. Its charming old streets offer plenty of restaurants and cafes. It is situated at an hour's drive by car or train from Brussels, the capital of Belgium and of the European Union, at the border of the beautiful forested region of the Ardennes. The congress atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with several symposia going on in parallel in adjacent rooms. Lunches can be taken at the university restaurant, in the restored mediaeval Arsenal. The congress normally includes a congress dinner, an excursion, and a meeting room for coffee breaks. Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations, but good quality and inexpensive accomodation in students' rooms will be available. A list of hotels will be forwarded on request. The official languages of the Congress are English and French . REGISTRATION FEES The registration fee covers participation in the Congress, the preparatory documents, a reception, the coffee-breaks and the Proceedings for the authors. In many ways, the unexpected demands of trench and submarine warfare, and new developments in aviation and transportation, set new challenges to conventional military tactics, strategy, and doctrine. At the same time, the conflict directly touched the institutions of European science. By 1916, the scientific communities of Britain, France, Russia, Germany and Austro-Hungary had patriotically forsaken the ethos of internationalism to fight a conflict unprecedented in modern history, or in modern science. In 1917, scientists of the United States joined the fray. By 1918, Europe was well acquainted with the effects of gas weapons and high explosives. Many said it had become a "chemists' war". For others, it was a war of engineering. For George Ellery Hale, distinguished astronomer and Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Science in Washington, DC, it was "the greatest chance we have ever had to advance research". At a time of renewed interest in the history of military-scientific relations, this paper explores the more immediate consequences of the war for science, and the leading consequences of science for the war. In particular, it focusses upon some of the experience of physics, and of physicists, and examines questions, literatures and archives that remain, to this day, incompletely assessed. Hovedvaegten vil blive lagt paa De Broglies thesis. Torsdag d. 16. april Doktor Jean Michel De Lire: Altars and Mathematics: The relations between ritual and geometry in ancient India Abstract: The relations between ritual and geometry are alluded to in ancient Greece, but never clearly stated as if they were seen from far away, already lost in a very ancient past. In Vedic India, the situation is completely different and one can see much better how the ritual prescritions could have influenced the mathematical knowledge. The aim of the talk is to give informations on the texts and the material on which the research of the speaker is conducted, the motivations for the ritual prescriptions of the ancient Indians and the mathematical problems these prescriptions have brought forth. It is noteworthy that these problems are closely related to the first problems the Greek mathematicians have considered. Torsdag d. 23. april stud. scient. Laila Zwisler: Teknik i antikken Abstract: Foredraget vil omhandle teknik i antikken. SUMMARY OF THE FIRST GLOBAL CYBERCONFERENCE ON PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE The first global cyberconference on Public Understanding of Science, a two-week affair from 25 February to 11 March, 1998, has been recently concluded. The proceedings, which consist of 200 responses to 35 opening statements, may be accessed at http://www.dur.ac.uk/~dss0www1/. Sponsored by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council's New Opportunities Programme, the conference was moderated by Professor Steve Fuller of Durham University, with technical support from Andrew Stansfield and Counterbalance, a nonprofit organization based in Seattle, USA. Over the two week period, the conference web board received nearly 2000 hits from 35 countries on every continent. Although the conference is now closed, a version of it may be reactivated in the future. Further information about the nature and content of the conference may be obtained by contacting steve.fuller[at]durham.ac.uk. The aim of the conference was to canvass the different meanings attached to the expression 'public understanding of science', and the extent to which these meanings represent convergent, parallel or conflicting agendas. Broader issues that attracted cross-cultural discussion included: *** Would 'public understanding of science' be regarded as an interesting area of research and funding without the belief that some group or other -- either scientists or non- scientists -- is suffering from a 'deficit' in their understanding of something or other? What would a non-deficit- based 'public understanding of science' look like? *** Is 'public understanding of science' something that should be integrated into the education of scientists, the general public, and/or expert specialists in 'science communication'? Does it first require mastery of the technical content of some science? To what extent can it be instilled outside the classroom? *** Should the 'public understanding of science' stress the limits of science so as to enable people to recognize its various abuses and misues? Or should it stress the power of science to produce, say, beneficial medical and technological change? *** Should one of the principal aims of the 'public understanding of science' be to increase people's acceptance of science in their lives or to make people more self- conscious and critical of science? *** Does science itself pose certain obstacles to the 'public understanding of science'? Are these obstacles generic to the institution of science or specific to particular settings? *** In what contexts are the public expected to act upon their understanding of science? Participation in science policy decisions? More scientifically informed lifestyles? Attendance at scientific events? Recruitment into the scientific ranks? In the coming months, the above issues will be analyzed in more detail for purposes of presenting a comprehensive account of the emergent features of this field. Preliminary findings will be published toward the end of the year in the journal, Public Understanding of Science. <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<> From: IN%"HASTRO-L[at]WVNVM.WVNET.EDU" "History of Astronomy Discussion Group" Subj: New Journal [abbreviated (red.)] This is a notice about a new biannual journal, Culture and Cosmos, and an offer for everyone on the HASTRO list. Culture and Cosmos is a refereed journal dedicated to the history of astrology and cultural astronomy. We are just about to go to printer with Vol. 1 no 2, and we will send a free copy to anyone on the HASTRO list who E mails us their regular mailing address to culture[at]caol.demon.co.uk as soon as possible. The contents of the coming volume are: Robert Zoller: The Hermetica as Ancient Science. Nick Kollerstrom: The Star Zodiac of Antiquity. Edgar Laird: Christine de Pizan and Controversy Concerning Star-Study in the Court of Charles V of France. Elizabeth Heine: W.B.Yeats: Poet and Astrologer. Jurgen Hoppman:: The Lichtenberger Prophecy and Melanchthons Horoscope for Luther EDITORIAL POLICY Culture and Cosmos is the first peer-reviewed journal to be devoted to the study of the history of both astrology and cultural astronomy. If astrology is the use of celestial phenomena to provide meaning for human life, then cultural astronomy is the broader use of astronomical beliefs and theories to regulate and inform society, politics, the arts and every aspect of human life, or the cultural pressures which motivate astronomical advances, including the more specific disciplines of ethnoastronomy and archaeoastronomy.. Since the publication in 1905 of Lynn Thorndike's 'The Place of Magic in the Intellectual History of Europe historians have grappled with astrology's historical role. Though now largely discredited from an academic standpoint, views of its past importance vary. It has been argued that its history is central to the history of science, or the history of religion or the history of ideas in general. Yet there is no journal which provides a single forum for publication and the exchange of ideas. Culture and Cosmos is intended to fill this gap. In that the journal will also deal with the history of cultural astronomy, we will publish material of wider interest. From Megalithic science, Sumerian astrology and Egyptian astral religion to the cultural impact of the Copernican or Einsteinian revolutions, down to the contemporary belief in alien abductions, we intend the journal to become a forum for debate on the broader impact of astronomical ideas on human society. In this sense we will overlap with some existing journals, such as the JHA, but we do not intend to carry papers on purely technical or mathematical aspects of the history of astronomy. We will also carry correspondence, reviews and news of any developments in the field. The Journal will be edited in line with normal academic standards, with peer review of articles, and we hope to make it available through all university libraries. Culture and Cosmos will be of interest to students of astronomy, of the history of science and the history of ideas. We hope that it will encourage students to consider the roles both of astronomy and astrology in the development of culture. Heilbron University of California, Berkeley Physicists in World War I: Mobilization and Propaganda World War I has a strong claim on the attention of historians of science. It was the first major conflict waged using weapons designed by scientists during the fighting. It brought scientists to the front literally, in technical combat arms, and figuratively, in the recognition of their importance to national defense. Organizations designed to mobilize scientific manpower formed the kernels of postwar institutions for the support of science and its applications. Instruments developed and data collected during the war accelerated the advance of several sciences, both pure and applied, during the peace. Prominent senior scientists on both sides competed in reviling their former colleagues on the other side and poisoned international relations more enduringly than gas poisoned the battlefields. This lecture will cover the collapse of scientific internationalism, the initial mobilization of scientists as cannon fodder, and the recall of chemists and physicists to produce strategic materials previously supplied by enemy powers. (During his visit to Denmark, Professor Heilbron will give two more lectures at the University of Aarhus on the topic "Physicists in World War I" . The first of these, "Conquests and Consequences," will describe the consequences of the wartime showing of science for its status, content, and support during the 1920s. It will be given on Tuesday, 12 May, at 3pm in Koll. G3 of the History of Science Department. 28.05. The Spring issue of Technoscience, official newsletter of 4S, will be published at the end of May. Usual announcements should be mailed to Jongwon Park at . Opinion pieces should be directed to either John Hultberg or Merle Jacob We made some important changes on our Web page. First, we now have a NEWS page, which will be updated twice a month or as we receive the announcements, to provide the most recent information on the activities that concerns 4S members. Information on conference, workshop, position, fellowship, etc will be updated regularly to fill the gap between the publication of regular paper version of Technoscience, which normally published in January, May and September. The home page of Technoscience also has a new look thanks to Theo Hultberg. The URL of the web page is the same as before: http://www.cis.vt.edu/technoscience/ Second, we plan to create and maintain a database of employables on our webpage. So far, the response has been somewhat low. We strongly urge recent Ph.Ds and others on the job market to advertise yourself. You need not be a 4S member to be included in this service. Just send a 200 word curriculum vitae (including contact points) to . Even if your posting doesn't lead to an actual job, it will at least be an opportunity for you to alert others to your existence and research interests. We welcome your suggestions and comments on our new webpage. Opslag: From: "Anne Lis Rasmussen, Niels Bohr Archive" The Niels Bohr Archive's Tuesday 19 May 1998 at 10:15 History of Science Seminar Auditorium A, Niels Bohr Institute Blegdamsvej 15, Copenhagen Professor Andrew Pickering University of Illinos at Urbana-Champaign The Alchemical Wedding of Science and Industry: Synthetic Dyes and Organic Chemistry, 1856-1890 The long-announced practical utility of science began to become a reality only in the late 19th century, in the development of the science-based industries -- the electrical industry and the synthetic dye industry. This talk focuses on the history of the latter and its relation to the science of organic chemistry. Historians often refer to a "marriage" of science and industry in this period, but I want to emphasise the alchemical aspects of this wedding. I want, that is, to suggest that it should be understood non-dualistically, as a process of the mutual becoming of the human and the nonhuman, of people and things: of technological artefacts and their powers; of social roles and relations, and of scientific knowledges. All of these heterogeneous elements evolved open-endedly and in relation to one another, eventually entering into a quasi-biological symbiosis that lies at the origins of the modern scientific-industrial complex. The topic is important for several reasons. Politically, this wedding of science and industry has been constitutive of the world we live in (for better and for worse), and the present analysis might help us to imagine it more clearly. Theoretically, the analysis gains significance from the fact that the academic disciplines are so bad at thinking alchemically. With their taken for granted dualism of people and things, they obscure important features of being in the world. My aim in this respect is to exemplify a new way of thinking about science, technology and society more generally. Aesthetics might also enter here: I personally find the alchemical image beautiful, difficult and fascinating. <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<> From: Jesper Lutzen Second Announcement of the Wessel Symposium 11-15th of August 1998. In 1797 the Norwegian surveyor Caspar Wessel presented a paper entitled "On the analytical representation of direction" to The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters". The paper was published separately the following year and included in the Academy's journal in 1799. It has become famous in the history of mathematics because it presented the first geometric representation of the complex numbers. In order to celebrate the bicentenary of this event The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters will host a Symposium from the 11th through the 15th of August 1998. The Symposium will be devoted to Caspar Wessel, his family, his time, his work as a surveyor and to general questions in the history of mathematics somehow related to complex functions and their geometric representation. Everybody with an interest in these matters are welcome to attend the symposium. However the number of participants is limited by the relatively small number of seats in the meeting room of the Academy. Therefore potentially interested participants are invited to sign up by writing to Jesper LŸtzen. Interested who have not signed up in advance can attend the symposium if there are seats available. The symposium takes place at The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, H.C. Andersens Boulevard 35, DK-1553 Copenhagen V. The Academy will provide lunch during the Symposium, and, if the finances allows it, also a free congress dinner to all participants. Otherwise it can only provide financial support to the invited speakers. All inquires concerning the Symposium should be directed to Jesper LŸtzen at The Department of Mathematics at Copenhagen University (see the address below) or before July 25 to Jesper LŸtzen , The Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology, MIT E 56-100, 38 Memorial Drive, Cambridge MA 02139, USA, or to the e-mail address: lutzen[at]math.ku.dk or before July 25: jlutzen[at]dibinst.mit.edu. Arnold De Loof Zoological Institute, University of Leuven, Belgium Arnold De Loof is a multi-talented biologist, who is well-known for his work within the field of insect endocrinology, but who also has a strong interest in the philosophical aspects of life. In his lecture of tonight*, he will analyse the basics of life and give a new definition of its very nature: There is almost a general consensus among biologists, philosophers etc. that it is impossible to formulate a plausible definition of "life". Because "life" is so extremely complex, they are convinced that our brain capacity is not sufficient for determining the nature of the "mystery of life". Furthermore, some biologists, even very famous ones, consider the question, "What is life?" as largely irrelevant. As a professor of biology, I consider this question as being the most relevant one of all. Can the question be answered in a plausible way, without using a "circular definition" and without abstract philosophical terminology? In my opinion, it can and it is not difficult at all to make the logical deductions. Why did nobody do it before? I think that nobody asked the right questions nor made the proper links. I found the links by asking and answering the question, "What is death?". Once one has defined "death", the definition of "life" is within reach. The definition of "life", as I deduced it, has important consequences for the theory of evolution: it follows, for example, that neo-Darwinism is an incomplete theory. (1) Belg. J. Zool. Yoshio Nishina (1890-1951) began building his international network of contacts when he first went to Europe in 1921 for further study. He spent about five years (1923-1928) with Niels Bohr in Copenhagen, one of a number of young Japanese who visited Bohr's Institute. After returning to Japan, he was appointed a chief researcher at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (Riken) in 1931, and given his own laboratory the following year. Through his laboratory, Nishina helped bring the "Copenhagen spirit" of Bohr's Institute to Japan. Nishina's career provides an interesting example of how physicists were able to deal with the internationalism of physics and the national needs of wartime. He headed the Army-funded "Ni-Project" (named after him), part of the very small-scale Japanese effort to produce an atomic bomb during the period from late 1942 to April 1945. <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<> Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 15:47:31 +0100 From: Brita Lundstršm Subject: DoktorandtjŠnster Vi pŒ Avd. fšr teknik- och vetenskapshistoria sšker tvŒ nya doktorander, en i teknikhistoria och en i industriminnesforskning. Torsdag d. 10.9. kl. 15.15 i koll. G4, Matematisk Institut Stud. scient. Torsdag d. 17.9. kl. 15.15 i koll. (Foredraget vil tildels vaere baseret paa bogen Revolutions Through Tradition: A History of Physics in the Twentieth Century, der udkommer paa Princeton University Press i 1999.) Onsdag d. 23.9. kl. 15.15 i lokale G1, Matematisk Institut Doktor Michael R. Matthews (Uni. of New South Wales, Au.): Time for Science Education: How Teaching about the History and Philosophy of Pendulum Motion can Contribute to Science Literacy Abstract: The lecture demonstrates the importance of history and philosophy of science for science education. It provides a case study of the pendulum, showing the pivotal role played by the pendulum in the Scientific Revolution. It describes how the pendulum enabled the creation of accurate clocks that, among other things, enabled the long-standing problem of longitude to be solved. The lecture charts how the solution of the longitude problem was of enormous social, economic and cultural significance for European, and consequently, world history. Further, the lecture shows how the discovery of the laws of pendulum motion by Galileo, Huygens and Newton hinged on the acceptance of a new methodology for science. The pendulum laws are a window through which to view the fascinating mixture of experiment, mathematics and philosophy that characterised the foundations of modern science (the Galilean-Newtonian paradigm) and distinguishes it from Aristotelian, medieval and commonsense science. The lecture defends a liberal, or contextual, approach to the teaching of science. It shows how understanding the scientific, philosophical and cultural contexts and ramifications of the pendulum laws, can allow teachers to plan more engaging lessons, and conduct informative historical-investigative experiments. Students can re-live history. Contextual understanding of the pendulum allows connections to be made with other parts of the science curriculum, and with other subject areas such as geography, literature, religion, music and mathematics. A historical and philosophical study of the pendulum can contribute to a deeper understanding of the nature of science and its role in history. (Foredraget er baseret paa Dr. Matthews fortkommende bog: Time for Science Education: How Teaching About the History and Philosophy of Pendulum Motion can Contribute to Science Literacy (Plenum Publishers, New York, 1999).) Ayala Abstract: The publication in 1859 of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin ushered in a new era in the intellectual history of mankind. Darwin is deservedly given credit for the theory of biological evolution. However, the import of Darwin's discovery transcends science. The ultimate significance of Darwin's achievement is that it completed the Copernican revolution initiated three centuries earlier, and thereby radically changed our conception of the universe and the place of mankind in it. The discoveries of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had gradually ushered in a conception of the university as matter in motion governed by natural laws. Their discoveries greatly expanded human knowledge, but the conceptual revolution they brought about was even more fundamental, a realization that the universe obeys immanent laws that can account for natural phenomena. The workings of the universe were brought into the realm of science: Explanation through natural laws. Darwin completed the Copernican revolution by drawing out for biology the ultimate conclusion of the notion of nature as a lawful system of matter in motion. The adaptations and diversity of organisms, the origin of novel and highly organized forms of life - even the origin of mankind - could now be explained by an orderly process of change governed by natural laws. <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<> From: "Anne Lis Rasmussen, Niels Bohr Archive" The Niels Bohr Archive's Monday 31 August 1998 at 14:15 History of Science Seminar Auditorium A, Niels Bohr Institute Blegdamsvej 15, Copenhagen Dr. Joan Bromberg Visiting Scholar, University of California at Davis Should Governments Conduct Technological Research? In the 1960s the US government's fusion energy program lost support among its funders, in Congress and in the administration. Its leaders responded by jumping on the tokamak bandwagon. Shortly after, they succeeded in parlaying public concern over environmental issues into a ten-fold budget increase, by putting the program on the road to a deuterium-tritium tokamak reactor. This political adroitness served them ill; it locked the program into a technology that electric utilities came to reject. It has digitised substantial runs of 18th and 19th Century journals, and these images are now available on the Internet together with their associated bibliographic data. The following titles are now available through the ILEJ service: Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine: Vol 53 - Vol 72 (1843 - 1852) Gentleman's Magazine: Vol 1 - Vol 20 (1731 - 1750) Notes and Queries: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th series (1849 - 1869) Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society: Vol 50 - Vol 67 (1757 - 1777) The Builder and the Annual Register are due to be added shortly. ILEJ is now entering its evaluation phase and we are keen to canvas opinion on the service. Please could we encourage list members with an interest in this area to take a look at ILEJ on the web at http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ilej/ We will soon be sending out a short survey to all registered users. Please could you register as a user when you take a look at the service, if you haven't already done so. Thanks, in advance, for your co-operation. G4, Matematisk Institut Doktor Brigitte van Tiggelen: UniversitŽ catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-neuve Manufacturing new Elements: The Case of Rhenium Abstract: The discovery of Rhenium (element 75 in the Periodic Table of the Elements) was claimed in 1925. It took the discoverers, Noddack, Tacke and Berg two years to produce a 1.6 mg sample of a Rhenium salt. However, by 1930 industrial production was organised in Germany and 120 kg of Rhenium compounds were available. Within less than six years, a naturally rare element became an industrial product for which technical applications and a market had appeared. The colloquium deals with the history of this accelerated technological transfer, from the controversies about the discovery to the commercial status of Re at the end of the 1930s. The lecture will not only rely on published material but also on Noddack's laboratory notebooks and other archive material, of which a recent inventory has been taken in Leuven ( Belgium). During the discovery period (1922-1929/30), several laboratories were looking after the missing elements 43, 75 and 93. Three teams were simultaneously on the track of elements 43 and 75: Walter Noddack, Ida Tacke (his co-worker and later his wife) and Otto Berg won the race. They were first to publish and also to produce a sample of Rhenium that could be put to the test. The controversy that followed is interesting from the point of view of what criteria the existence for an element requires and how to prove its characteristics. The sample produced by the Noddack's and the manufactured samples by Siemens und Halske in 1927 was to remain property of the firms and two persons were put to work inside the enterprise to find the most suitable production process for Re. Paradoxically, it was due to a chemist working for another group of factories that the real production of Re began in 1931: the production of 120 kg of the Rhenium compound KReO4. From then on, Re was no longer a 'Privatelement' as the Noddack couple had stated it, but became the commercial property of chemical firms through the patenting process. mvh Anita Kildebaek Nielsen 89 42 35 09, ievhakn[at]dfi.aau.dk <>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<> From: Brita Lundstršm Subject: Seminarier ht-98 Seminarier vid Avdelningen fšr teknik- och vetenskapshistoria, KTH. 01.10. New Book! From: Steve Fuller Subject: new book: sociology of philosophies I have just received a copy of the long-awaited _The Sociology of Philosophies: A Global Theory of Intellectual Change_ by Randall Collins (Harvard University Press, 1998). It weighs in at 1000 pages, but it lives up to its title, providing the institutional and intellectual development of the major philosophical traditions of the East and West. For anyone interested in the relationship between the spread of ideas, the formation of alliances, and the importance of cultural context, the book will be essential reading. One of the best -- and no doubt controversial -- features of the book is that Collins treats the social and intellectual contexts as basically two sides of the same coin. In simplest terms, the density of a philospher's social network is treated as a rough measure of the complexity of his/her thought (as if one writes to activate a set of nodes in response). This can either have good or bad consequences for the line of thought, depending on other contextual features, such as the political climate, the strength of universities, etc. In any case, I find the book a real page-turner. I am also happy to say that this is an unsolicited report. No money has changed hands, and I had nothing to do with the book's publication.
