Tempo and Mode in Evolution fra 1995, Molecular Evolution fra 1976 , og Studies in the Philosophy of Biology, 1974, holder i aften et foredrag om det darwinistiske verdensbilledes status: Abstract: The publication in 1859 of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin ushered in a new era in the intellectual history of mankind. Darwin is deservedly given credit for the theory of biological evolution. However, the import of Darwin's discovery transcends science. The ultimate significance of Darwin's achievement is that it completed the Copernican revolution initiated three centuries earlier, and thereby radically changed our conception of the universe and the place of mankind in it. The discoveries of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had gradually ushered in a conception of the university as matter in motion governed by natural laws. Their discoveries greatly expanded human knowledge, but the conceptual revolution they brought about was even more fundamental, a realization that the universe obeys immanent laws that can account for natural phenomena. The workings of the universe were brought into the realm of science: Explanation through natural laws. Darwin completed the Copernican revolution by drawing out for biology the ultimate conclusion of the notion of nature as a lawful system of matter in motion. The adaptations and diversity of organisms, the origin of novel and highly organized forms of life - even the origin of mankind - could now be explained by an orderly process of change governed by natural laws. First, during the early decades of the century, special physics research institutes were established for research personalities of special distinction such as Svante Arrhenius, The Svedberg, C.W. Oseen, and Manne Siegbahn. Second, so-called branch research institutes were established, where physics and other research was expected to be relevant to a particular branch of industry or within a particular section of society. Researchers at both kinds of institutes had a good chance at obtaining greater financial support for their work, not least because the institutes received private as well as state funding. At the same time, they had no teaching requirements, at least at the basic university level. With greater opportunity for undisturbed and resource-intensive research, the professors especially at the first kind of institute came to define a new top rung in the academic career ladder. The third major institutional change occurred in the early 1940s, when the procedure of establishing the above-mentioned research institutes inspired the founding of new agencies for research funding -- namely the research councils which came to play a significant role in the expansion of the research system in the 1950s and 1960s. In promoting the institutionalisation of research, Swedish physicists often turned abroad for inspiration. IMFUFA - Institut for studiet af Matematik og Fysik samt deres funktioner i Undervisning, Forskning og Anvendelser, Roskilde Universitetscenter 30.10. Ivor Grattan-Guinness (Middlesex University) Matematikkens grundlag: Det logicistiske program Matematikhistorikeren professor Ivor Grattan-Guinness arbejder pt paa en bog om det logicistiske program for matematikkens grundlag. Logicismen blev grundlagt og udviklet af Gottlob Frege og Bertrand Russell omkring aarhundredeskiftet. Selv om det ikke laengere anses for gennemfoerligt, har det spillet en stor rolle for diskussionerne omkring matematikkens grundlag i dette aarhundrede. Professor Ivor Grattan- Guinness vil fortaelle om sine undersoegelser af det logicistiske program. Seminaret er arrangeret i samarbejde med Netvaerket i Matematikkens Historie og Filosofi. 13.11. Peter Hauge Jensen (Nyborg Gymnasium) Begrundelsesproblemet: Teori og praksis Med teoretisk udgangspunkt i en afklaring af gymnasiematematikkens begrundelsesproblem soeges en raekke forskellige praktiske aspekter af begrundelsesproblemet belyst paa baggrund af 3 aars undervisning i matematik i gymnasiet og paa HF. Der vil blive argumenteret for noedvendigheden af at se begrundelsesproblemet i en samfundsmaessig- historisk, kulturel og paedagogisk sammenhaeng. Forhold som gymnasiets bekendtgoerelsesmaessige grundlag og aktuelle tendenser i struktureringen af undervisningen i dagens gymnasium vil blive omtalt, ligesom foredraget vil beroere visse sider af matematikundervisningens forhold til den teknologiske udvikling. 20.11. Jacob Jacobsen (IMFUFA) Modellering af blodstroemningen i hjertet Foredraget vil praesentere og diskutere en matematisk model af blodstroemningen i et plant snit gennem venstre halvdel af hjertet. Dette snit viser venstre for- og hjertekammer, gaar gennem udloebstragten til aorta samt gennemskaerer den tofligede mitralklap, der forbinder forkammeret med hjertekammeret. Modellen, der skyldes Charles Peskin, behandler den kraftudoevende del af hjertemuskulaturen, samt tilhoerende passivt vaev, som en en- dimensional elastisk rand indlejret i et vaeskefyldt bassin. Vaesken inden for randen repraesenterer her blodet i hjertet, mens vaesken uden for repraesenterer muskelmasse og omgivende vaev. Vaeskestroemningen opstaar i et samspil mellem vaeske og rand, idet randen via sin (tidsafhaengige) elastiske spaending udoever kraefter paa vaesken, som til gengaeld flytter randen med sig. Der vil blive vist animationer af forskellige modelkoersler og modelresultater vil blive sammenlignet med maalte data for hastighedsfeltet af blodstroemningen i det menneskelige hjerte. Nor is it unknown that he made positive contributions to certain physical disciplines. Best known among these are, perhaps, his solution of the Boltzmann equation and his formulation of the field equations of general relativity. However, HIlbert's interest in physical issues has often been considered, in one way or another, to be a somewhat incidental aside, aways from his main focus of attention on those issues traditionally associated with his name: the theory of algebraic invariants, algebraic number theory, foundations of geometry, analysis, foundations of arithmetic. A closer inspection into HIlbert's actual scope of scientific engagement shows a somewhat different picture, in which physics plays a very prominent role. Any attempt to describe Hilbert's contribution and his enormous impact on twentieth-century mathematics, without paying due attention to this prominent role, will be incomplete and misleading. Mathematics and physics are tightly interwoven in Hilbert's conceptions, and one cannot understand his views on the former withour connecting it with his views on the latter. Peder Voetmann Christiansen (IMFUFA) Innsbruck-eksperimentet Et nyt eksperiment i Innsbruck (Zeilinger, Weihs m.fl.) har endnu en gang bekraeftet kvantemekanikkens formalisme under "ekstreme" forhold. Eksperimentet tager hoejde for mange af de indvendinger, som blev rejst mod Aspect-eksperimentet i 82. Spoergsmaalet er saa, om det nye eksperiment kan siges at vise kvantemekanikkens fuldstaendighed, og hvad man i givet fald skal forstaa ved det, hvis man oensker at bibeholde en vis realisme i fysikken. Selv om den saakaldte ikke-lokalitet herefter nok ikke er til at komme uden om, boer der alligevel advares mod den antirealisme og formel-ortodoksi, som fortolkningerne kan give anledning til. Henry Nielsen (Inst. for de Eksakte Videnskabers Historie, Aarhus Universitet) Risoe 1953-97: En stor dansk forskningsinstitutions forvandling Forberedelserne til opbygningen af Atomenergikommissionens forsoegsanlaeg paa halvoeen Risoe repraesenterede et kvantespring i statslige udgifter til dansk forskning. Den store forbroedring omkring Risoe holdt dog ikke laenge. Allerede i 1963 kom den unge forskningsinstitution ud i en kamp for livet, da elvaerkerne offentligt tog afstand fra Risoes selvbestaltede rolle som atomkraftens frontkaemper, og da andre grupper i det danske samfund benyttede lejligheden til at forsoege at fravriste Risoe nogle af dets store forskningsbevillinger. Risoe har dog overlevet alle anslag indtil nu, har haft sine successer og sine fiaskoer, og har lidt efter lidt forandret sig, saa Risoe i dag er en helt anden institution end den, der oprindeligt var planlagt. I forelaesningen vil en af forfatterne til Risoes historie (udkom i juni 1998) diskutere nogle af de vigtigste forandringer, der har fundet sted paa Risoe fra planlaegningsfasen i midten af 1950erne til indgaaelsen af den nye resultatkontrakt mellem forskningsministeriet og Risoe i oktober 1997. Eksperimentet tager hoejde for mange af de indvendinger, som blev rejst mod Aspect-eksperimentet i 82. Spoergsmaalet er saa, om det nye eksperiment kan siges at vise kvantemekanikkens fuldstaendighed, og hvad man i givet fald skal forstaa ved det, hvis man oensker at bibeholde en vis realisme i fysikken. Selv om den saakaldte ikke-lokalitet herefter nok ikke er til at komme uden om, boer der alligevel advares mod den antirealisme og formel-ortodoksi, som fortolkningerne kan give anledning til. In both of these phases, scientists at the US Naval Research Laboratory played an important role, one shaped by the techological commitments embodied in their research techniques and in the subsequent images of the ionosphere presented as the result of their research. The distinctive character of this work during the prewar period can be seen from comparisons to both other American research and to ionospheric work carried out in Norway in the course of auroral studies. After World War II, ionospheric research at NRL underwent a dramatic shift with the changing technological needs of the U.S. Navy. Stuewer Program in History of Science and Technology University of Minnesota The Case of the Elusive Particles: Nuclear Disintegration and the Cambridge-Vienna Controversy A major focus of research in the history of science today is the interplay of theory, experiment, and observation, and how this interplay can lead to new scientific knowledge. Within this broad endeavor, scientific controversies offer a particularly fruitful object of study, since scientists holding opposing points of view often subject a range of issues to intense scrutiny, and careful examination of those issues can reveal a great deal about how science actually functions in a particular historical context. The case to be discussed in this talk concerns the origin, development, and surprising resolution of a dispute during the years 1922-1928 between, on the one hand, Ernest Rutherford and James Chadwick at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England, and, on the other hand, Hans Pettersson and Gerhard Kirsch at the Institute for Radium Research in Vienna, Austria. At issue scientifically in this protracted Cambridge-Vienna controversy was which elements (nuclei) could be disintegrated by alpha particles with the emission of protons, whether these elusive disintegration protons could be observed under particular experimental conditions, and how such a nuclear-disintegration process should be interpreted theoretically. These scientific issues, at the same time, became thoroughly entangled in a web of personal and institutional rivalries, raising the stakes in the outcome of the controversy to a high level. Fraser IHPST, University of Toronto: Adolph Mayer's Contributions to the Calculus of Variations ABSTRACT: Next to Weierstrass, the Leipzig mathematician Adolph Mayer was the most important researcher in the calculus of variations in the second half of the nineteenth century. Among his most significant contributions were his analysis of Jacobi's theorem in his Habilitationsschrift of 1866, his proof of the multiplier rule in 1886 and his contributions to field theory in 1904. The paper will provide an overview of Mayer's achievements, focusing in some detail on his early work of the 1860s on the second variation. It is explained how this work brought the classical theory of the second variation for the general variational problem to completion. Koordinaterne til et vilkŒrligt punkt pŒ jorden kan nu bestemmes bedre end centimeteren efter 30 minutters mŒling pŒ signaler udsendt fra GPS satellitter. Geografiske informationssystemer betyder helt nye krav til kort. Digitale kort analyseres sammen med alle mulige former for geografisk relaterede data. Craig Fraser (University of Toronto) Celestial Mechanics after Laplace: A History of Canonical Perturbation Theory During the nineteenth century there was a significant change in the mathematical style of celestial mechanics. Canonical perturbation techniques, transformation theory and methods of Hamilton and Jacobi had by the end of the century become dominant mathematical tools in the study of lunar and planetary theory as well as in more abstract investigations of the three-body problem. There were two distinct groups of researchers involved in this development. The first group consisted of Lagrange, Poisson, Binet, Hansen and Delaunay, and the second of Hamilton, Jacobi, Tisserand and Poincare. The paper identifies the main characteristics of each group and explores the conceptual and historical connections that existed between their respective approaches to perturbation theory. The development of new medical technology is a field of rapid growth. New drugs, medical devices, medical and surgical procedures used in medical care are being introduced into our health care system at an alarming speed. Politicians and admini-strators are faced with the responsibility for making decisions which involve balancing the health care budget with professional and patient desires for the newest treatments. For this reason many countries have set up facilities for assessing and prioritising medical technology. The definition of medical technology assessment as a comprehensive form of policy research that examines the technical, econo-mic and social consequences of technological applications is interdisciplinary in its approach. The purpose of this course is to examine what this means. This course addresses PhD students in the health care professions. It is also aimed at students in the political, social and human sciences with an interest in technology assessment as a policy-based research tool for decision- makers in the health care sector. The target group is those persons interested in gaining knowledge which will enable them to design, conduct and evaluate studies in medical technology assessment. It will provide an understanding of major principles and methods in medical technology assessment. How medical technology assessment is structured and organised on an international as well as national level will also be a focus. Succesen gentages i Œr ud fra temaet: "Det moderne samfunds naturrelation og naturvidenskaben". Anledningen er den omfattende diskussion om den sŒkaldte naturvidenskabelige krise, og udgangspunktet er naturvidenskabens gennemgribende pr¾gning af det moderne samfunds naturrelation, bŒde pŒ teknologiske, kulturelle og samfundsstrukturelle omrŒder. Gruppen vil fors¿ge at organisere en koordinationsgruppe for K¿benhavns-regionen (der omfatter KU, RUC, DTU, HHK, KVL, DLH m.fl.), som skal tage del i de kommende initiativer. Det kom under debatten af dette frem, at Danmarks ForskningsrŒd i anbefalingerne til forskningsbudgettet for 2000 har peget pŒ, at der b¿r ¿gede frie midler til forskningsrŒdssystemet. Det blev ogsŒ n¾vnt, at Peder Olesen Larsen, i sidste nummer af Berlingske Tidendes till¾g "Univers" har en meget kritisk anmeldelse af Forskningsministeriets Forskningspolitiske redeg¿relse, der ogsŒ peger pŒ behovet for ¿gede frie midler! Opslag From: "Anne Lis Rasmussen, Niels Bohr Archive" The Niels Bohr Archive's Monday 8 February 1999 at 15:15 History of Science Seminar Auditorium M, Niels Bohr Institute Blegdamsvej 21, Copenhagen John Krige Director, Centre de Recherche en Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques, Paris Ford Foundation support for European physics in the Cold War Beginning in 1956, and for about a decade, the Ford Foundation provided $1.2 million in financial aid to two major centres for physics in Europe, CERN in Geneva and the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen. The Foundation made it clear, however, that this money was not for the purchase of equipment nor for physics research as such. Indeed it used these two centres as poles in its policy of cultural diplomacy and to promote the transmission of American democratic values beyond the shores of the US. This was originally limited to Western Europe, but then extended behind the iron and bamboo curtains with the support of the CIA. This paper explores this hypothesis by studying the discovery of the heavy bosons at CERN by two teams, UA1 (led by Carlo Rubbia) and UA2 (led by Pierre Darriulat) in the early 1980s. It explains the motivations which led the CERN manangement not only to support this programme, but to finance two different groups in the same laboratory, drawing attention to their mistrust of Rubbia's credibility. It then explores in detail the announcement of the discovery showing how the claimed reliability of the results evolved over a period of ten days in response to confirming results surely but also in response to a range of social, intellectual and political pressures. While trust is not, of course, the only variable in accepting the truth claims made by others, it is shown to be one important and hitherto neglected factor. 11.2.: Jan Tapdrup: Naturfilosofien og l¾reb¿ger i det 18. Œrhundrede, som en periode indenfor videnskabshistorien. Nogle har betvivlet rimeligheden i generelt at lave perioder i det hele taget og har i stedet unders¿gt udviklingen af delemner, sŒsom hydraulik eller mekanik. Andre har ment, at man godt kan lave perioder, men at det 18. Œrhundrede ikke er en: Det 18. Œrhundrede falder blot mellem to andre perioder - eller - de historiske perioder gŒr pŒ tv¾rs af det 18. Œrhundrede. Det 18. Œrhundrede er dog af de fleste blevet set som en periode domineret af Newtonianisme, men dette synspunkt er man ved at gŒ v¾k fra. Grunden til disse diskussioner er de store forandringer, der skete i perioden. I begyndelsen af Œrhundredet inkluderede naturl¾re emner fra kosmologi over psykologi til biologi og fysik, mens det i slutningen af perioden var blevet et fag man, med en vis rimelighed, kan betegne som eksperimentel fysik. I perioden ses sŒledes en radikal forandring af fagets indhold og taxonomi. Hvordan kan man fŒ et overblik over disse ¾ndringer? Generelle l¾reb¿ger i naturl¾re begynder at dukke op i denne periode. I mit speciale fra Oxford har jeg unders¿gt en r¾kke af sŒdanne b¿ger fra. ca. 1770- ca. 1805 for at se, om de kan belyse en r¾kke sp¿rgsmŒl: Hvad handlede naturfilosofi om? Var man enig i, hvordan faget skulle opfattes? ®ndredes en sŒdan konsensus, hvis den eksisterede, med tiden? Hvor matematisk var disciplinen og hvad var dens forhold til andre discipliner? 25.2.: Nils Voje Johansen: Caspar Wessel landmŒler og matematiker Abstract: 10. mars 1797 ble det i Videnskabernes Selskab i K¿benhavn framlagt en artikkel skrevet av landmŒler Caspar Wessel. Artikkelen kom pŒ trykk i Selskabets skrifter i 1799 uten Œ vekke samtidens interesse. Omlag 100 Œr senere ble artikkelen gjenoppdaget og det viste seg at Wessel i artikkelen hadde gitt en geometrisk representasjon av de komplekse tall. I mitt foredrag vil jeg kort gŒ inn pŒ Caspar Wessel som person og landmŒler - og spesielt fokusere pŒ hans landmŒlingsjournal fra 1787 hvor han benytter det komplekse plan i forbindelse med kartprojeksjonen. Wessel har altsŒ benyttet seg av det komplekse plan minst 10 Œr f¿r artikkelen ble skrevet. 4.3.: Mads Jensen Leonhard Eulers Introductio in analysin infinitorum, bind II Abstract: I 1748 udgav den schweiziske matematiker Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) tobindsv¾rket Introductio in analysin infinitorum - Introduktion til analyse af uendeligheder - som det f¿rste element i hans sŒkaldte trilogi. Trilogien, der senere blev fuldendt med et v¾rk om differentialregningen og et om integralregningen, skulle efter forfatterens egen hensigt v¾re en fuldst¾ndig oversigt over den matematiske analyse. Introductio omhandler i Bind I den rene analyse (Analysin purae), og i Bind II belyser Euler analysens anvendelser i geometrien (applicatio ad Geometriam). Eftertidens matematikhistorikere har imidlertid i h¿j grad tilsidesat det andet bind og fokuseret pŒ de umiddelbare matematiske sk¿nheder, bind I rummer; og derfor har jeg valgt hovedsageligt at belyse sp¿rgsmŒlet: Hvad stŒr der egentlig i Bind II ?. I foredraget vil jeg give smagspr¿ver pŒ Eulers analytiske geometri hentet i Introductios andet bind. Specielt hans analyse af andenordens kurverne - dvs. keglesnittene - er n¾rmere omtale v¾rd. Et andet interessant karakteristikum ved Introductio er Eulers bevidste undladelse af anvendelse af differentialregning. If¿lge Eulers egne ord i v¾rkets forord, er et af de overordnede mŒl med Introductio at illustrere, i hvor h¿j grad analyse og algebra dikterer dagsordenen indenfor geometri. For ham er sagens kerne at vise, at den syntetiske geometri er temmelig overfl¿dig. Alle problemer kan l¿ses ved hj¾lp af algebraiske manipulationer og analyse. Analysen er ikke blot et v¾rkt¿j til besvarelse af geometriske sp¿rgsmŒl. Analyse er endnu mere fundamental end geometri! Jeg vil runde foredraget af med at se pŒ, i hvilken udstr¾kning Euler formŒede at opfylde ovenstŒende mŒls¾tning. Hvilken betydning fik Introductio for eftertiden, og hvorfor "glemte" matematikhistorikerne bind II ? 4.3.: kl. 1600: Viktor Kristensen: Aspekter af algebraens fundamental-s¾tning Abstract: For de fleste er "Algebraens fundamentals¾tning" nok rodf¾stet i de komplekse tal, for ordlyden er idag, at ethvert polynomium med komplekse koefficienter har en kompleks eller reel rod. Problemerne omkring polynomierne, deres nulpunkter og faktorisering er imidlertid langt ¾ldre end bŒde de reelle og komplekse tal. I begyndelsen af det 17. Œrhundrede var det for eksempel afg¿rende for mange geometriske konstruktions opgaver, at man kunne konstruere en l¿sning til en polynomiumsligning. Descartes pŒstod sŒledes i sin La GŽomŽtri fra 1617, at han havde vist metoden til konstruktionen af en vilkŒrlig polynomiumslignings l¿sning. Det, der har vagt min interesse, er de forskellige fors¿g og tiltag til at pŒvise eksistensen af enten en rod eller en faktor af 1.- eller 2. grad. Det fine ved problemet er, at det der umiddelbart synes at v¾re et algebraisk problem, umuligt lader sig l¿se uden at g¿re brug af resultater, der h¿rer hjemme i analysen. Det er sŒledes specielt mellemv¾rdis¾tningen, der gŒr igen hos for eksempel bŒde Euler og Gauss. Hovedv¾gten i foredraget vil v¾re centreret omkring Eulers Recherches sur les racines imaginaires des equations fra 1749 samt Gauss' beviser fra hhv. 1797, 1815, 1816. Udover en kort pr¾sentation af beviserne vil jeg fokusere pŒ de problemer, der uundv¾rligt dukker op, og som givet vis har v¾ret en stor inspiration for eftertiden. Euler, der regner af hjertens lyst, synes visse steder at bruge eksistensen af et nulpunkt som foruds¾tning, hvilket er kritisk, hvis han da overhovedet har tvivlet pŒ eksistensen. Dette er stadig et Œbent sp¿rgsmŒl i skrivende stund. Gauss havner blandt andet i sit 3. bevis i en interessant diskussion af hvornŒr det har mening at tale om v¾rdien et planintegral, der synligg¿r et behov for en fornyet anskuelse af integralet. 11.3.: Donald B. Wagner: Liu Hui's brug af infinitesimaler (3. Œrh. e.v.t.) Abstract: Den kinesiske matematiker Liu Hui har i sin kommentar til den klassiske matematikbog Jiuzhang suanshu givet bevislignende forklaringer pŒ alle algorithmerne. I hans forklaringer pŒ formlerne for cirklens areal (A=cd/4) og for en yangma's rumfang (en pyramide med rektagonal base, V=abh/3) bliver han tvunget ud i infinitesimalbetragtninger, som ellers er fremmede for den kinesiske matematik. 18.3.: Anja Skaar Jacobsen: J.J. Winterls indflydelse pŒ H.C. ¯rsteds kemiske virke Abstract: Den ungarnske kemiker Jacob Joseph Winterl (1739-1809) publicerede i 1800 et v¾rk, Prolusiones ad Chemiam Seculi Decimi Noni, hvori han pr¾senterede et dualistisk kemisk system baseret pŒ principperne om syrer og baser. Det etablerede kemiske samfund afskrev den da lidt ¾ldre og i Pest lidt yderligt placerede Winterl som en ren spekulant, men han skabte et entusiastisk r¿re blandt hovedsageligt tyske, unge, mŒske lidt romantiske "kemikere" med sit lidt underlige kemiske system. OgsŒ den unge, nyuddannede H. C. ¯rsted blev meget grebet af Winterls ideer og under sit ophold i Berlin 1801-1802 introducerede og forsvarede han et udpluk af Winterls ideer i skriftet Materialen zu einer Chemie des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. ¯rsted vedblev at anerkende Winterl som en stor t¾nker, og nogle af sidstn¾vntes principper optog han permanent i sine egne teorier. I kollokviet vil jeg i korte tr¾k skitsere Winterls kemiske system, beskrive modtagelsen af det og analysere baggrunden for ¯rsteds fascination af det. 25.3.: Malene M. Bak: Kontroversen om Voltas¿jlen 1800-1850 Abstract: I Œr 1800 beskrev den italienske videnskabsmand Alessandro Volta en konstruktion, som var i stand til at frembringe en j¾vnstr¿m over l¾ngere tid: "Voltas¿jlen". Volta mente, at frembringelsen af str¿m skyldtes kontakten mellem de to forskellige metaller i s¿jlen. Denne teori kaldtes "kontaktteorien", og var pŒ dette tidspunkt accepteret af de fleste videnskabsm¾nd. Snart fremsatte Humphrey Davy dog en anden teori, "den kemiske teori", som var i modstrid med kontaktteorien.. Gennem hele det n¾ste Œrhundrede udviklede kampen mellem tilh¾ngere og modstandere af kontaktteorien sig til en uds¾dvanlig lang og forvirret kontrovers. I kollokviet gives en gennemgang af kontroversens forl¿b fra Voltas¿jlens opfindelse til kontroversens slutning omkring Œr 1950. Kontaktteorien og den kemiske teori pr¾senteres og sammenlignes, og der bliver givet et eksempel pŒ et af de mange eksperimenter i kontroversen. Som konklusion uddrages nogle interessante aspekter af kontroversen, og der fors¿ges at give en analyse af den komplicerede kontrovers. 4.3.: kl. 1600: Henrik Zederkof: The Stinkbomb - Paul Feyerabends v¾rk Against Method Abstract: Stinkbomben er Paul Feyerabends egen betegnelse for sit mest kendte v¾rk Against Method fra 1975, hvori han pr¾senterede sin anarkistiske videnskabsteori under slagord "anything goes". Som man kan ane, varFeyerabend forberedt pŒ en blandet modtagelse af v¾rket, men alligevel Against Method blev n¾rmest historisk dŒrligt modtaget af dens anmeldere. Samtidig bevirkede dens mere politiske konklusioner, dens kulturelle relativisme, at Feyerabend blev kendt ogsŒ udenfor en sn¾ver kreds af fagfilosoffer. I dag, hvor stormen efter Against Method forl¾ngst har lagt sig, er billedet af Feyerabend stadig broget: En klovn eller en af Œrhundredets store (misforstŒede) t¾nkere? Jeg vil fort¾lle om baggrunden for Against Method, fremdrage nogle af reaktionerne pŒ den og endelig komme ind pŒ, hvad Feyerabend selv mente om den senere hen. David Lando (KU, Institut for Matematiske Fag, Afdelingen for Operationsanalyse) Matematiske modeller for finansielle markeder Da den sŒkaldte 'hedge fund' LTCM i sommeren 1998 gik fallit vakte det en del opm¾rksomhed, eftersom nobelpristagerne i ¿konomi Robert Merton og Myron Scholes var partnere i selskabet. Af nogle blev det opfattet som et bevis pŒ, at matematiske modeller for finansielle markeder ikke kan bruges til noget. Jeg vil i foredraget tage udgangspunkt i Black-Scholes modellen (hvis fundamentale princip vil blive gennemgŒet), og g¿re rede for hvorfor matematiske modeller - til trods for deres begr¾nsninger - er uundv¾rlige i moderne finansielle markeder. Jeg vil ogsŒ diskutere nogle af de nuv¾rende modellers begr¾nsninger. Disse begr¾nsninger har v¾ret studeret flittigt allerede inden LTCMs sammenbrud, men de har selvf¿lgelig fŒet fornyet opm¾rksomhed ovenpŒ dette. 11.02. Andrey Legin (Chemistry Department, St. Petersburg University) Electronic tongue - A new method for analysis of complex liquid media on the basis of chemical sensor arrays and pattern recognition The principal aim of the present work is assessment of analytical perspectives of a new instrument for multicomponent chemical analysis - "electronic tongue", based on an array of originally designed non-specific solution chemical sensors, and pattern recognition tools. The "electronic tongue" is supposed to be capable to produce integral qualitative imaging (artificial tasting) of complex liquids such as food stuffs and beverages. The method is also successfully applicable to quantitative analysis of different objects such from biological liquids to natural waters. 18.02. AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE The thesis of the incommensurability of scientific theories is one of the most controversial claims to emerge from the post-positivist historical turn in the philosophy of science. Incommensurability and post-positivism are currently the subject of renewed discussion in the wake of the recent deaths of Paul Feyerabend and Thomas Kuhn. Further interest has been stimulated by the development in Kuhn's later work of a sophisticated taxonomic version of the incommensurability thesis. Additional sources of interest include the recent application of cognitive models of conceptual change to the issue of incommensurability, as well as continued efforts to develop an account of the reference of theoretical terms. This conference seeks to promote discussion of the current status of the incommensurability thesis, by drawing together various strands of contemporary debate on the topic, and facilitating interaction between alternative approaches to the problem currently being pursued. Among the matters related to incommensurability which it is hoped the conference will explore are such issues as: realist vs. anti-realist perspectives on incommensurability, meaning vs. reference variance, reference and theory comparison, reference of theoretical terms, translation failure between theories, rational theory choice, local incommensurability, taxonomic incommensurability, meta-incommensurability, cognition and conceptual change, historical studies of conceptual change.
