A, Niels Bohr Institute Blegdamsvej 17, Copenhagen Silvan S. Schweber Professor of Physics and Richard Koret Professor in the History of Ideas Brandeis University Genius and Community: Einstein and Oppenheimer In his Preface to The advancement of science, and its burdens (Cambridge University Press, 1986), a collection of essays which contains several of his articles on Einstein, Gerald Holton indicated that he hoped that collectively they would suggest answers to some of the following questions: How did [Einstein's] work shape the culture of science ...? What is the modern scientists' belief system, and do they still need a guiding philosophy of science, whether held consciously or not? .. .. What limits may society validly place on the work of researchers? I shall address these issues by looking at Einstein and Oppenheimer, at some of the communities they belonged to, and at some of their interactions. Doing so highlights the role played by philosophical commitments. It also raises the issue of how to assess the life, the work and the legacy of exceptional individuals when the context they were instrumental in changing, has changed radically. Einstein had a high regard for Oppenheimer and had only respectful things to say about him. Oppenheimer, though deeply admiring of Einstein, was at times publicly highly critical of him. I shall give an account of Oppenheimer's recorded statements regarding Einstein and address the question: "Why the antagonism on Oppenheimer's part?" I shall then offer some answers by looking at Oppenheimer's and Einstein's relation to their roots. http://www.nbi.dk/NBA/files/sem/09jun05.html -- Videnskabshistorisk Selskab Danish Society for the History of Science http://www.math.ku.dk/videnskabshistorie Sekret¾r Donald B. ResumŽ af afhandlingen: Der er mange grunde til naturvidenskabernes vanskeligheder med at tiltr¾kke studies¿gende. Philosophy in Quantum Mechanics: High Principles, Rhetorical Strategies, and Academic Ritual Early debates about the interpretation of the emerging quantum mechanics, 1925 through 1927, were very different from the resulting conflict over the theory in its mature form. This talk analyzes the evolving stances taken by key participants on four major controversial value-related issues: Anschaulichkeit (or visualizability), Discontinuity, the Wave-Particle Dilemma, and Causality. The usual picture, according to which the philosophical debate consisted of two main camps, is found to be an oversimplification and a post-hoc justification of the final outcome of the controversy. A closer conceptual analysis reveals more than one line of disagreement between major authors, even between those who were working in close collaboration, such as Heisenberg and Born, or Heisenberg and Bohr. For tactical reasons, some of the disagreements were emphasized and discussed publicly, while others were downplayed. Furthermore, participants did not stick to their philosophical principles but often changed them as rhetorical tools: individual positions presented as strongly held principles were actually very flexible, in certain cases virtually reversing, sometimes as often as twice in the course of a year. An analysis of the social and cultural reasons for such lack of principled commitment to philosophical interpretation leads to a new, somewhat revised, form of the 1971 Forman thesis on Weimar culture and quantum acausality. Today there is a deep and growing interest in understanding technology and its role in society. We witness a huge number of philosophical studies of technology. These studies cover a wide class of issues such as the connection (and difference) between science and technology; the differences between the idea of scientific progress and the idea of technological progress, and so forth. The emphasis of this conference is on knowledge, viewed from the perspectives of technology, engineering science and science. For a long time the paradigm for knowledge was found in the natural sciences. Technology was perceived as 'applied science'. Indeed technology has been characterized by a tendency only to look forward, thus emphasizing its perceived scientific basis. Today this view has changed. Engineers have played a prominent role in the formation of modern society. Now philosophers have begun to appreciate the importance of technology as praxis in the formation of new knowledge. The increased interest has led to philosophical analysis of the epistemological basis of engineering knowledge and development. The direct connection between engineering/technology and science has been questioned. At the same time there is no doubt about the interdependence between science and technology. The purpose of this meeting is to identify the interrelationship between scientific knowledge and technological knowledge, locate paradigms and trace some of the new trends in these philosophical studies. Wagner oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo from: "Kees van Kooten Niekerk" THE DANISH SCIENCE-THEOLOGY FORUM 25th Anniversary Conference THEOLOGY AND SCIENCE Issues for Future Dialogue December 3rd and 4th, 2005 University of Aarhus INTRODUCTION In 2005 the Danish Science-Theology Forum will celebrate its 25th anniversary of contributing to the dialogue between science and theology. The Danish Science-Theology Forum was established in 1980 at the University of Aarhus by two theologians (Svend Andersen; Viggo Mortensen) and two scientists (Arn Gyldenholm; Poul V. Thomsen) in order to promote the dialogue between theology and the natural sciences. The purpose of the Forum is to promote the mutual dialogue between theology and the natural sciences on questions involving both fields. On the one hand, these are questions that concern the understanding of nature. The dialogue between theology and the sciences is not possible unless all parties acquire an elementary knowledge of each others' disciplines. Therefore an important part of the Forum's activities consists of information about what is going on in the different fields. On the other hand, there is room for additional perspectives besides theological and scientific ones, which may enrich or mediate the discussion. This refers primarily to philosophy and the philosophy of science, both with regard to the interpretation of the world and with regard to ethics. This anniversary conference will aim at bringing our discussions up to date on five central topics for the Forum through the years; Physics and Cosmology, Neurology, Complexity, Biology, and Ethics. Our invited speakers are all experts within their field and all of them have participated in the dialogue. Through the five presentations we will become acquainted with the most pressing issues of the field and at the same time there will be opportunity to discuss many interesting question, which arise out of the dialogue between the different fields. Tid 16. If you intend to submit a proposal for the Oxford Symposium or for the Cracow Conference, I remind you that the deadline for proposal submissions for both of these events is November 15th. Below I paste the annoucements of the symposium and of the conference. Additional information can be found on our webpage under the address http://www.eshs.org Sincerely yours, Stephanie Dupouy, Secretary of ESHS. Second ESHS International Conference, Cracow, (6-9/09/2006) : Call for papers EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE POLISH ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES THE JAGELLONIAN UNIVERISTY INSTITUTE FOR THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES The Global and the Local: The History of Science and the Cultural Integration of Europe Cracow 6-9 September 2006 An international conference organized jointly by the European Society for the History of Science, the Commission on the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Commission for European Matters of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Jagiellonian University, and the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in co-operation with Czech, Hungarian and Slovak institutions. The European Society for the History of Science will hold its second international conference in Cracow, a city located at the heart of Europe that has long been a traditional place for ex-changes between various parts of the continent. Beginning on the evening of Wednesday 6 September 2006 (with the opening plenary lecture and a reception and get-together party) and ending, after three full days, on Saturday 9 September, the conference is planned as an important event within a series of initiatives aimed at creating a European community in the history of science. The first conference of the ESHS, held in Maastricht from 4 to 6 Novem-ber 2004, set the tone, and we now look forward to building on the achievements of that con-ference in a gathering that will bring together scholars from all parts of Europe, from the West and East, North and South, and Centre of the continent. Proposals for Sessions On 7 and 8 September, the conference will be organized around sessions or symposia devoted to specific themes (for which suggestions are invited from potential participants). It is hoped that these sessions will take advantage of the presence of scholars from across Europe to break new ground in the fashioning of comparative and integrative perspectives. It is pro-posed that one of these sessions, or a group of sessions, should address the general theme of communication and exchanges in science between European countries, especially between the nations of Eastern, Western, and Central Europe. Other sessions will be devoted to cur-rent areas of research in the history of science, such as the relations between science and re-ligion, science and the arts, women in science, science and technology, science and society, and the role of instruments and instrumentation. But suggestions for other themes and histo-riographical debates would be welcome. All suggestions should be sent to the Conference Office in Cracow by 15 November 2005. The final day of the conference, 9 September, will be devoted to a special symposium on the past, present, and future prospects of the history of science in European higher education. Proposals for sessions and detailed sub-themes of this symposium may be formulated by rep-resentatives of national societies and other relevant academic bodies, and by eminent indi-viduals. They should be addressed to the Conference Office in Cracow by 15 November 2005. They should be accompanied by a summary of the proposal (maximum of 100 words) and, in the case of the individual proposer, a brief curriculum vitae. The email address for all proposals is: 2iceshs[ at ]cyfronet.pl.Please give as the subject 'R proposals' (for sessions on 'research matters') or 'HE proposals' (for the symposium on 'higher education matters'). Proposals should be prepared as Microsoft Word 97 documents. They should be single-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman, except for the title of the proposal (14-point bold) and the name(s) of the institution(s) and email address(es) (10-point). The name(s) of the au-thor(s) and institution(s) and the e-mail address(es) and the title of the proposal should be centred. The main text should be justified. Proposals for individual papers Scholars wishing to present a 20-minute contributed paper are invited to submit a one-page abstract for consideration by the programme committee. Abstracts, which should be sent to the Conference Office in Cracow by 15 March 2006, should be presented in the same format as the proposals for sessions and symposia (see above). Please give 'CP proposals' as the subject for proposals for contributed papers. All those submitting proposals will be informed of the programme committee's decisions by 15 April 2006. Deadlines * Proposals for sessions and symposia: 15 November 2005 * Abstracts of contributed papers: 15 March 2006 * Notification of acceptance of contributed paper: 15 April 2006 * Deadlines for registration: 1 June 2006 * Deadline for hotel reservation: 1 June 2006 Conference fee: 99 euros, excluding conference dinner (21 euros). The fee for participants registered after 1 June 2006 will be 140 euros, and 25 euros for the dinner. Further details on the conference will be given (and systematically updated) on the Conference website. Please note that although this is a conference of the ESHS, participation is not limited to members of the society. On behalf of the Organizing Committees: Prof. Robert Fox (Chairman of the Program Committee), Prof. Zdzislaw Mach (Chairman of the Local Committee), Prof. Claude Debru (Vice-chairman of the Program and Local Committees), and Dr Michal Kokowski (Vice-chairman of the Program and Local Committees). * * * International Symposium : Oxford (24-25/03/2006) : Call for papers EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE SOCIƒTE FRAN‚AISE D'HISTOIRE DES SCIENCES ET DES TECHNIQUES THE BRITISH SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE MAISON FRAN‚AISE D'OXFORD Franco-British interactions in science since the seventeenth century Maison franaise, Norham Road, Oxford Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March 2006 This international symposium is a joint initiative of the European Society for the History of Science, the SociŽtŽ franaise d'histoire des sciences et des techniques, the British Society for the History of Science, and the Maison franaise, Oxford. It is the first in what is intended to be a series of symposia organized by the ESHS in collaboration with national societies or other appropriate bodies. Proposals for papers on any aspects of communication and exchanges between France and Britain in science, medicine, and technology between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries are invited. The profile of the sessions will be determined in the light of the proposals that are received, but it is hoped that papers will treat such topics as translation, travels, correspondence, and both collaborations and rivalries. The length of the papers has been fixed provisionally at 25-30 minutes, with 10-15 minutes for discussion in each case. Papers may be delivered in either French or English. To ease the inevitable linguistic problems, an extended summary of each paper will be made available to all participants in advance. The symposium will begin immediately after lunch on Friday 24 March and will continue through the whole of Saturday 25 March, ending at 17.00. A visit to the Museum of the History of Science has been arranged for the early evening of 24 March; this will be accompanied by a brief presentation of the collection by the Director, Dr Jim Bennett, and a drinks reception. Following the visit to the Museum, a conference dinner will be held in Oriel College, although participants in the symposium will be free to make their own arrangements for dinner if they prefer. Proposals for papers should be sent by 15 November 2005 at the latest to either of the following addresses: * For proposals from participants in France: Madame Anne Bonnefoy SecrŽtaire gŽnŽrale de la SFHST Espace Mends France 1 place de la CathŽdrale BP 80964 86038 Poitiers Cedex France Anne.bonnefoy[ at ]pictascience.org * For proposals other than those from French colleagues: Professor Robert Fox Professor of the History of Science Modern History Faculty Broad Street Oxford OX1 3BD Britain robert.fox[ at ]history.ox.ac.uk Proposals should be accompanied by a summary of between 150 and 200 words and a brief curriculum vitae (one page maximum). Opslag: oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo From: Videnskabshistorisk Selskab Conference SHIFTING APPROACHES IN THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF EXACT SCIENCES We want to draw your attention to a conference coming up November 17-18, 2005 in Copenhagen. The meeting is dedicated to Jens H¿yrup on the occasion of his retirement from Roskilde University. Jens H¿yrup's thinking does not vanish when the retirement begins. He will still be associated with the department and, as he is much concerned with the topic of the meeting, the organizers are sure that the meeting in essential ways will stimulate his future work. We look forward to seeing you at the Conference. THEME AND PURPOSE The focus of historiography of the exact sciences has shifted in recent decades. Terms like "whig history of science", "social constructivism", "deconstructivism", or "postmodern-ism" turn up quite frequently now. Such shifting perspectives are mainly seen in the history the empirical sciences and not so often in the history of mathematics. However in recent years we have witnessed similar trends in the historiography of mathematics. Does that mean that historians of mathematics are growing the same crop as everybody else while be-ing more interested in cultivating their ground than in putting up fences around it? Or are they growing similar crops but doing it in ways they consider more sustainable (perhaps, as one leading proponent of that approach once formulated it, because mathematics is "the hard case" for social constructivism)? It is the purpose of this meeting to trace some of these shifting perspectives and discuss their importance for modern studies in the history of exact sciences. All speakers at the meeting are professional historians of science and have delivered original contributions to the history of science and technology. They are expected to discuss their own experiences with new views and how these historiographic discussions have influenced their own works. The picture is the most celebrated image in Tycho Brahe's 1588 book _De mundi aetherei recentioribus phaenomenis_, and it shows Tycho's new system of the world. I will address two specific questions about the picture: Why does he call this image a 'Hypotyposis'? And what do the circles bearing planetary symbols actually represent? The answers, I will suggest, are to be found in connections between the reception of Peuerbach's _Theoricae novae_ and Copernicus' _De Revolutionibus_, as read by astronomers from Wittenberg. The historical arguments I will present form part of a larger project, which is a general critique of the historiography of astronomy and physics introduced by Pierre Duhem, and still accepted uncritically by most historians of science. The presentation will be followed by comments on the film from the points of view of physics, philosophy and the history of science. Lars Becker-Larsen describes his film as follows: "The world cannot be so crazy," Albert Einstein is said to have stated about the philosophical lesson that Niels Bohr derived from quantum physics. Bohr's lesson is known as the Copenhagen interpretation, and since it was first presented in the 1920s, it has been a bone of contention. To this day, prominent physicists disagree about the far-reaching consequences of the Copenhagen interpretation and what is to be understood as "reality". In Vienna, the recent realization in practice of some of the central thought experiments of quantum physics have demonstrated clearly that the tiniest building blocks of all things constitute a paradoxically different world. Now the strange quantum phenomena can be ascertained even at great distances, and physicists hope that they can be utilized in a future generation of extremely fast computers. The film will be followed by ten-minute comments by Eugene Polzik, professor of physics at the Quantum Optics Laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute; Carl Henrik Koch, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Copenhagen; and Helge Kragh, professor of the history of science at the University of Aarhus. After the comments, there will be a general discussion. The principal aim of this project is to provide junior scholars of the history of science with first hand information about the latest developments in the field of material culture of science. Participants will have the opportunity to visit and work with rare collections Europe-wide. Museums will present themselves as sites for research and working place for historians of science. The Seminar curriculum includes discussions with exhibition makers as well as curators on conservation work, exhibition programmes, and questions such as: How to present the work of a historian of science to the general public? How to choose and display objects for narrating the history of science? There will also be more theoretical seminars on the definition of scientific objects or the relation of things, image and text. The participants will be asked to document their trip in a way that enables them to present the results of the Wandering Seminar in a workshop organized by the group itself in 2007. (Possible forms of publication might be articles, reviews of exhibitions, biographies of selected objects etc.). Participants will be chosen either through nomination by one of the cooperating institutions in the Research Network and/or the Wandering Seminar, or by application for the two postdoctoral fellowships advertised internationally by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. The participants should be supported by a grant of their home institution that covers their basic living expenses during the Wandering Seminar. Internettet: Nyttige v¾rkt¿jer og steder A complete copy of the Century Dictionary is available free on-line at http://www.global-language.com/century/ To access it effectively you have to download the special software called "Deja Vu", but that is very easily done -- downloaded and installed effortlessly -- from the home page of the Dictionary at the URL above. Here is a paragraph from an introduction to the Dictionary at the website: =====quote=== In a way The Century Dictionary can be considered the Titanic of dictionaries, fabled in its day as the largest, most comprehensive dictionary yet completed. (In fact, with one exception, it is still the largest English language dictionary in existence.) Its chief editor, William Dwight Whitney, Professor of Comparative Philology and Sanskrit at Yale, was the most renowned English-speaking linguist of his time. Funded by the Century Company of New York, which also published the Century Magazine and St. Nicholas, Whitney, who had been an editor of the famed 1864 edition of Webster's, was able to assemble a staff of contributors that included such luminaries of American scholarship as Charles Peirce, Gifford Pinchot, and John Dewey. The printer of The Century Dictionary was Theodore Low De Vinne, the finest American printer of the time, and the contributing artists included the young Ernest Thompson Seton. Indeed, The Century Dictionary is still considered by many scholars to be the greatest American dictionary of all time. After the 1914 edition, however, it was dropped by the Century Company and eventually lost to public view. Lexicographers, as a rule, tend to be a lot more modest than dictionary marketers and publicists, but it is the latter who create and maintain the "aura" of a dictionary in the public mind. Without an active publishing company to tout it with the kind of hype one hears constantly applied to certain other works, The Century Dictionary was consigned to what one might call a mute afterlife in the back rooms of second-hand bookshops and the dens of a few collectors. Of course, it has always had its admirers, as evidenced, among other things, by the fact that it is still actively cited, and perhaps more tellingly by the fact that over the years its contents (illustrative quotations as well as definitions) have been quietly pillaged by other dictionaries. =====end quote=== And a quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_Dictionary The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia was one of the largest and most highly regarded dictionaries of the English language. The first edition was published from 1889 to 1891 by the Century Company of New York, in six, eight, or ten volume versions (originally issued in 24 fascicles) in 7,046 pages with some 10,000 wood-engraved illustrations. It was edited by Sanskrit scholar and linguist William Dwight Whitney, with Benjamin Eli Smith's assistance. It was largely based on the smaller Imperial Dictionary, which in turn had been based on the 1841 edition of Noah Webster's 'American Dictionary.
