Er lægen og oldtidsforskeren Ole Worms teorier om dyr og planter fra renæssancen naturvidenskab i moderne forstand?

Er den amerikanske kunstner Rosamond Purcells aktuelle rekonstruktion af Ole Worms naturaliekabinet, "Museum Wormianum", kunst?

Mandag d. 25. september afholder Steno Museet et heldagskollokvium med temaet "kunst, naturvidenskab og udstillingspraksis".

Ophavskvinden til rekonstruktionen af Worms kabinet, Rosamond Purcell, der er bosiddende i Boston, fortæller om sit arbejde med Worm og med værket. Camilla Mordhorst fra Medicinsk Museion sætter den nutidige forståelse af Worm og hans teorier til debat, Jan Gruwier Larsen fra Naturhistorisk Museum forklarer, hvorfor han mener kunstudstillinger og udstillinger om naturvidenskab er to alen af ét stykke. Mette Kia Krabbe Meyer fra Steno Museet taler om forholdet mellem videnskab og kunst i planerne for udvidelsen af Steno Museet, og endelig giver Carina Serritzlew og Kristian Hvidtfelt Nielsen fra henholdsvis Kvindemuseet og Steno Instituttet et radikalt bud på en tværfaglig udstillingsstrategi.

Hvad gør videnskab til videnskab og kunst til kunst? Skal vi udstille kunsten på kunstmuseerne og naturvidenskaben på de naturvidenskabelige museer, eller giver den klassiske fagopdeling ikke mening længere? Skaber tværfaglighed oplevelser og refleksion eller irritation og forvirring hos fagfolk og museumsgæster? Kom, hør og deltag i diskussionen af disse aktuelle spørgsmål.

Kollokviet foregår på engelsk.

I am happy to inform you that Ronald E. Doel has agreed to give a seminar at short notice. He is a specialist in the field, and his talk is based on his latest research, as expressed, for example in an important article by him and Kristine C. Harper in the current issue of the journal Osiris (Vol. 21, 2006), which can be consulted (for those interested) here at the Niels Bohr Archive. In recent years, scholars have begun to reassess our understanding of the intersection of science with American foreign policy following World War II. Were state attitudes towards scientific internationalism, collaboration, and exchange primarily shaped by physicists, or by members of other scientific fields? To what extent did U.S. scientists feel compromised by state actions involving international scientific activities in the 1950s and 1960s, and what responses did they take? Was the prestige of science a more important contribution to the start of the Cold War than previously recognized, and are historians only beginning to glimpse significant shifts in international scientific practices that emerged in this period? This talk assesses current ideas and still-unresolved questions.

Palæoantropologien er videnskaben om menneskets evolution og de tidligste menneskers biologi og adfærd. Palæoantropologien har været bedrevet i moderne forstand siden midten af 1800-tallet hvor de tidligste fossilfund og evolutionsteorien, i kombination med etnografiske analogier og den forhistoriske arkæologis kronologi gav det basale videnskabelige værktøj til teorier om menneskets oprindelse og udvikling.

Siden da har især en overvældende mængde af nye fund, konstateringen af en stor artspluralisme og naturvidenskabelige analysemetoder givet stadig mere detaljerede og komplicerede teorier om menneskets oprindelse.

Lige siden palæoantropologiens fremkomst har faget dog ligeledes været båret og præget af udenomsvidenskabelige antagelser om selve det at være menneske. Fagets teorier og udviklingsscenarier har til enhver tid i lige så høj grad afspejlet sin samtids mennskesyn som fortidens realiteter. Dette ses også tydeligt i fagets populære formidling.

Foredraget vil præsentere en række eksempler på disse koblinger mellem videnskab og menneskesyn bl.a. i relation til troen på menneskelig aggression, seksualitet og kønsroller og vil desuden eksemplifisere de ofte nære sammenhænge mellem fagets popularisering, visuelle udtryk og faglighed der har fostret farverige figurer som f.eks. Den grønlandske neandertaler, Vandaben, Den mitokondrielle Eva og Aben der dræbte sin egen frænde. Fordraget bygger på Anne Katrine Gjerløffs p.d.afhandling (forsvaret maj 2005) Abens Ansigter. Palæoantropologiens historie og formidling i Danmark i det 20. århundrede.

Åbne seminarer på Medicinsk Museion i efteråret

Medicinsk Museion er Københavns Universitets afdeling for forskning, museumsformidling og undervisning indenfor medicinhistorie.

Vores satsningsområde er for tiden 'Recent Biomedicine in Denmark 1955-2005', der også er tema for Museions tirsdagsseminarer.

Nogle af disse er åbne for gæster, og vi inviterer (foreløbig) til nedenstående tre arrangementer i efteråret, hvor vi har hentet tre kapaciteter til København.

Seminarerne indledes typisk med et længere mundtligt oplæg, efterfulgt af åben diskussion og kommentarer.

De finder sted på Medicinsk Museion, Fredericiagade 18, 1310 København K. Efterfølgende holder vi 'post-seminar' med et glas og en snak i frokoststuen.

Towards a `New Materialism'?

Exploring Artifactuality and Material Culture in History of Science, Technology and Medicine A monthly Øresund reading symposium arranged by History of Technology Division, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)/The Danish National Museum of Science and Technology, Medical Museion, University of Copenhagen, & Research Policy Institute, Lund University

The last decade have seen the appearance of a number of books pointing toward a growing interest in the role of material culture, material agency and `artifactuality' inside as well as outside history of science, technology and medicine. One example is art historian W. J. T. Mitchell, main protagonists of the visual turn that supposedly supplanted the linguistic turn in the 1990s, in describing the anthology Things That Talk (2004) as an example of "advanced research in what might be called the 'new materialism.' Unlike the old materialism, which dreamed of a positive science, purified of linguistic accident, ideological prejudice, or fantasy, the new takes aim directly at the figuration and imaging of objects, factoids, and things."

To explore this potential `artifactual turn' within recent history of science, technology and medicine the History of Technology Division, Technical University of Denmark in partnership with The Danish National Museum of Science and Technology; the Medical Museion, University of Copenhagen; and the Research Policy Institute, Lund University, invites researchers, curators and graduate students in the Øresund region and beyond to participate in a new reading symposium devoted to this `new materialism'. It will meet once a month from October until June at a museum or research institution alternatively in Copenhagen and Lund/Malmö to discuss a book according to the list below. The symposia will take place 1-3pm for 2 hours of combined discussion and lunch followed by an optional tour of the hosting institution. The discussions will be in English or Scandinavian depending on the participants. We hope to be able to pay for all books and lunches for the participants.

We expect to be able to accommodate all interested but if we will have to limit the number of participants we reserve the right to decide who can participate with priority to graduate students. It is not necessary to attend every meeting to participate but priority will be given to those expressing their intention in following the whole symposium. Those interested in participating should send an email expressing their interest by Thursday September 21 to symposium organizer Mats Fridlund, Associate Professor of History of Technology at DTU at maf[at]dtv.dk. For the first seminar on October 5 the readings will be sent out electronically and for the following meetings books will be sent out in advance. It is possible for graduate students to follow the reading group for credit as a 5 credit PhD-course given by teachers from DTU and Lund University. Students taking the course will be required to write comments on the readings, attend four additional seminars, give an introduction to one seminar and write a research paper. The conclusion of the PhD course would be a public symposium after the summer where the students present their final papers.

National Cataloguing Unit for the Archives of Contemporary Scientists, University of Bath, UK

The UK National Cataloguing Unit for the Archives of Contemporary Scientists (NCUACS) has over thirty years experiences in locating, cataloguing and finding permanent homes for the archives of leading contemporary British scientists, thus preserving and making accessible the original source materials for the history of science. Its present Director, who has been associated with the work for over twenty years, will consider some of the particular challenges of the work including relations with the scientific community, the changing nature of scientific communication and record keeping, and the securing of the necessary resources to fund the archival programme. The work of the NCUACS in the UK will be placed in a wider international context drawing on its Director's experience with the CASE (Cooperation on Archives of Science in Europe) group and the IUHPS DHST Bibliography and Documentation Commission.

Anvendt Filosofi-minisymposion

Symposiet stiller skarpt på anvendt teoretisk filosofi: Hvordan kan teoretisk filosofisk viden anvendes udenfor traditionelle filosofiske arbejdsfelter såsom filosofisk forskning og undervisning? Hvordan kan man som studerende erhverve kompetence til at gøre dette? Bør teoretisk filosofi overhovedet være i kontakt med mere konkrete emner/være mere anvendelsesduelig eller kommer fagets berettigelse et andet sted fra? Til at holde oplæg inviteres derfor tre personer som har en solid filosofisk skoling og i deres karriere bevæget sig væk fra filosofiens traditionelle arbejdsområder, men som stadig bruger filosofisk viden i deres arbejde.
