Applied Statistics - Week 8
Monday the 13th - Friday the 17th of January 2025
The following is a description of what we will go through during this
week of the course. The chapter references and computer exercises are
considered read, understood, and solved by the beginning of the
following class, where I'll shortly go through the exercise
solution.
Monday:
The lecture will be a relatively thorough walk through the Problem Set.
I'll go each problem, and discuss the solution. From this, we hope that you will
be reminded of the general curriculum and get the more fine details of statistics in place.
The exercise is an example of the art of fitting. The higher the number of details wanted
and liberties given (and hence the more parameters involved), the greater of an art it is.
Today's exercise is about building a simple model, and then introducing more and more parameters.
Alternatively, you may catch up on whichever exercise(s) you think are relevant. We will answer any
questions, and assist with remaining exercises and/or (rehersal) exam questions.
Reading:
Curve Fitting (Wikipedia)
Lecture(s):
Problem Set - Solutions and Comments.
The additional options are to discuss the 2016 exam and outstanding statistics questions in general.
Computer Exercise(s):
Advanced fitting exercise:
HarmonicOscillatorFit_original.ipynb,
      data_HarmOsc1.txt,
      data_HarmOsc2.txt,
      data_HarmOsc3.txt,
Re-visiting problem set, working on Exam2016, and discussing other exercises.
Tuesday:
The lecture will be dedicated to answering questions regarding the exam and related statistics.
The exercise is either to continue yesterday's fitting exercise,
or again catch up on whichever exercise(s) you think are relevant.
Reading:
A good (alternative) introduction to Monte Carlo simulations is actually
Wikipedia on Monte Carlo.
Lecture(s):
Simpson's Paradox
I will answer questions and shortly go through an Exam Check List.
Computer Exercise(s):
Re-visiting problem set, working on Exam2016, and discussing other exercises.
Advanced fitting exercise (in case you didn't manage Monday):
HarmonicOscillatorFit_original.ipynb
Thursday:
Exam will be given at 8:00 at the latest.
Possible files and scripts will be made available on the course webpage and GitHub at the same time. I will announce it on Absalon.
Friday:
Exam has to be handed in by 20:00 SHARP!
Exam solutions (in PDF with no/little code) should be submitted along with all
the code used to produce them (separately as an appendix - as many files as you
like in whatever format!) at eksamen.ku.dk.
If you for some reason can not submit your exam solution on eksamen.ku.dk,
then you should send your solution (along with separate code) by mail to me.
If you have any general problems, then you should write or call me asap!
